A Poem
From Mrs. Eby ...
—VISION—
I believe in America. She means
something special and different
from other nations. Often we
forget what she means. We
let ourselves think she means
money, lands, machinery, mer
chandise and man|>ower and
we think we have the world by
the tail because we have an
abundance of such assets. But
that's childish thinking. Other
nations have had equal trea
sure and yet have gone down.
If wealth is all that America
means, tlien America will end
like all the others. But America
does mean more than wealth,
lands and manpower: She was
based on a vision — a vision of
freedom and equality with each
man given a sacred right and
chance to make the most of
himself. Of course, we haven’t
achieved that vision yet. We’re
still unfair, unkind and stupid
but we are on our way.
I believe in America because she
has that vision and it’s in her
her heart, as well as on the
books. Yes 1 know — she bluffs
and pretends, acts smarty, and
I oks and passes the buck. But
in spite of that there’s some
thing fine in America: Some
tiling that ail the spies and
slackness, crooks, cowards,
powers and parasites can nev
er black out: I believe in Amer
ica! I believe in her future!
She’s been in plenty of jams
before but she has always won
through for you can’t kill a
vision.
Money may fail you—lands may
fail you, But that vision will al
ways won. iBank on that, neigh
bor. Bank on the dream that
led to “Plymouth Rock” —
started the covered wagon cav
alcade, bank on that fierce in
sistant vision we've held to, of
freedom and fair play. Pray
for it, fight for it, sacrifice
your last breath for it. ‘ Amer
ica will win through.”
