According to Extension Fores ter Karl Loerch, tree orders to Clarke McNary are somewhat behind a year ago. However, there will be a limit to the supply and all farmers and ranchers are urged to make their wants known as soon as possible. The ACP payment for trees and planting is $7 per hundred Costs of trees and planting will probably average $9 50 per hundred. According to Bob Hill. Unit conservationist, he believes many farmers will be interested in single row plantings of Red Cedar. These single row plant ing have proven very popular in North Dakota and Canada and appear in pattern plantings over many square miles of territory in that area. Single rows of conifers will give a maximum protection to crops and farm land both in winter and summer. Only a small amount of land is taken out of production and the benefits re ceived are many. For exumple, it will greatly reduce soil blow ing, more evenly deposit snow for greater benefits from winter moisture, reduce hazards of hot, dry summer winds and they need nui in: iciitcu vwiitru aftermath during the winter months). Regardless of the size of the I belt, following are some tips on tree planting: 1. Well prepared ground. If sod, fallow or use cover crop one year prior to planting (this will permit better and easier cultiva tion.) 2. Plant the kind of trees that are best suited to the soil site. 3. Space rows wide enough to fit cultivating equipment to be used. 4. Keep trees weed free through proper cultivation. Some of the best implements are tan dem disc or small one way, or com cultivator. Many cooperators have used row crops such as com, sweet com, sudan or grain sorghums between the rows and cultivated with a com cultivator. This also reduces damage from hot summer winds, winter soil or snow blowing as well as reducing rabbit damage. 5. Consider the use of herbi cide. Apply in 20 to 30 inch band down each row immediately after planting or before weed growth starts on established trees. Apply at Vi the rate recommended for com.
