Cards, Burns Fight to 0-0 Tie; To Battle at Ewing on Friday loe Cardinals failed to profit from a lesson they taught St. Ocilla the previous week, as they time and again lost posses sion of the twill via fumbles, in terceptions, and mental miscues. Dlspltr tin* fart that they gave up possession of the hall four times by fumbles, twice by Interceptions plus being forced to punt once, the Cards nevertheless salvaged a tie from a team that they were favored to beat by 3 1 touch downs. SMA opened the game with a 69-yard drive that carried to the 10-yard line before bogging down. This drive took 14 plays and found the Cards moving the hall well both on the ground and In the air, but once halted they failed to jell again until the closing minute of play. Th<* next six times SMA had the ball they managed to lose the ball in four plays or less, thus stalling any thing in the way of an offensive threat. The Knights had the ball all but three plays of the third quarter but were unable to muster any type of scoring threat until the final four minutes of the game when they drove to the Cards 7-yard line before St. Mary's halted their drive with 1:15 left in the game. Behind some fine receiving by little Tommy VVanser the Cards raced downfield to cover 65 yards in seven plays only to have the clock inn out before they could score. All was not dark though for the Cards demonstrated some fine defensive play and moved the hall well when they weren’t fumbling. Having the ball for only 36 plays they gained 223 yards for a 6.2 per play average as compared to Norfolk Bums 198 yards in 49 plays for a 4. average. The fine tackling by Wanser, Jim Sullivan and Ray Belina plus the forward wall play provided the crowd with plenty of hard hitting football. It was an exciting game for the viewers as both teams had opportunities tQ 80cre. The com petitive spirit between the two teams plus the excitment of St. Mary's homecoming celebration brought about an air of unbea able suspense to the onlookers. SMA is undefeated after eight games, seven victories and Fri day night's tie. The last St. Mary’s club lost was a year ago when the Knights won 14-7. St. Mary's is now 4-0-1 this season. The Cards hoping to rebound from their poor showing in the 0-0 tie with Burns last week, will journey to Ewing Friday night. The Tigers with but a 1-4 record have a team composed mainly of underclassmen and look to be a year away. Dispite their won-list record the Ewing Tigers are net to be overlooked, as the only dark spot on their record is last week’s upset by Springview. Other de feats hive been to some cf the area’s top teams, Battle Creek, Spencer and Siuart. Th? Cardinals, with Norman Mudloff and Terry Tomjack pro bably seeing limited action, will find a couple of new faces in the lineup. Dick Larsen, freshmen guard will replace Tom jack on of fense while Mike Hammond will fill in on defense. A number of reserves showed well in last Monday's scrimmage, and undoubtly will see lots of ac tion in the remaining games. Those men ting special notice, were Joe Shoemaker for his de fensive play and Bill Pruss who has moved into the No. 2 quarter back spot. The St. Mary’s Reserves will journey to Spalding Monday night for a 7:30 game with the Spalding Academy reserves. Orchard Whips Naper Bears 13-6 At Homecoming ORCHARD — The Orchard Orioles celebrated following their homecoming game with the Najier Hears Friday night after scoring a win of 13-6. During halftime ceremonies Tom Twibell and Claudia Mitchell were crowned king and queen. A parade was held in the afternoon and the floats w'ere dis played at the game along with the marching band. Skip Woodworth had a 35-yd. touchdown run in the final period to cinch the win for the Orioles. Kevin Waring made the other six points for the Orchard team. Rollen Kibby made the TD for the Naper team. Be royalty was presented in halftime at the Springview-Ewing game. Their attendants were (1. to r.) Bill Lofquist (not shown), Joe Tagel, Me Thoendal. Tom Finley, the royal couple, Pat Hobbs, Pauline Jorgensen, Sandy Thelander and Shear Swlfeer. Homecoming activi ties included a parade in the afternoon, the ball game, crowning ceremonies and a dance following the game. Spencer Drops Niobrara 274) SPENCER — A 27-0 win over Niobrara Friday evening gave Spencer its first Niobrara Valley conference win in eight-man foot ball. Bob Haun scored high for the Spencer team, bringing home tliree touchdowns of 30, 68 and 14 yards. He also lacked two extra points and passed for another. John Sieler scored Spencer's ot her six pointer on a quarterback sneak. Outstanding defense players were Bob Haun with 17 tackles, assisted in fine style by Bob Scheinost, Paul Ohri and R. Ko pecky. Next week Spencer will host the Verdigre Hawks who have five straight wins. Score by quarters: Spencer 0 14 0 13 27 Niobrara 0 0 0 0 0 Springview Clips Ewing 24-12 EWING — Two touchdowns in the last quarter by Springview brought a 24-12 win over Ewing in the homecoming game played Fri day evening on the Ewing field. Paul Adikson and Paul Graes ser scored two touchdowns each for Springview. Ewings TD was made by Joe Tagel on a 32-yard run. Verdigre Clips Lynch 19-13 VERDIGRE — The fifth straight win was racked up by the Verdigre Hawks here Friday evening when they defeated Lynch 19-13. The eight-man team put toge ther a touchdown pass play in the last three seconds to give the Hawks the win. The deciding play was a 12-yarder from Allen Boelter to Leland Timmerman. Boelter and Johnnie Farnik were responsible for the other two touchdowns through ground plays. Leslie Holz and Loren Mulhair made the Lynch TD’s. Good defensive play by Joe Michanek and Loren Pinkerman highlighted the Lynch play. Mar vin Soucek, Dennis Mott, Douglas Miller and Larry Sukup were outstanding for Verdigre. Score by quarters: Verdigre 0 0 13 6 19 Lynch 7 6 0 0 13 Butte High Homecoming Held Friday BUTTE — The Butte high school Homecoming was held Fri day afternoon with a large num ber of floats in the parade led by the American Legion and Butte band. Dale Ellwanger and Helen Mathers were crowned as king and queen during the coronation ceremony which was held on Main street before the parade. Other candidates were Darol and Dale Ellwanger, Barbara Vickery and Sheryl Orr. Three kindergarten girls carried the crowns and flowers, Rhonda Anderson. Vivian Frasch and Sheryl Mathers. Winners of the floats were as follows: High school—Pep club, first place; freshman class, second, and junior and sopho more classes tied for third place. Grade school—Seventh and eighth grades, first; third and fourth, second, and kindergarten, third. Business—Beauty shop, first; Lions club, second, and Farm store, third. Rural—District 25. first; Dis trict 10, second, and District 77, third. In the evening the Butte Wild cats met the Bonesteel Tigers in a 12-0 game, won by Butte. The band performed at halftime and the king and queen passed in review. Eagles Take 27-0 Win at Creighton; Injuries Plague O'Neill High Team rrioay night the O’Neill high school Eagles journeyed u> Creighton and remained unde feated. by stopping Creighton 27-0. OHS elected to receive and had the ball first and ten on their own 20 yd line On the first play from scrimmage, Jack McGinn romped 62 yds around the right end for the Eagles first down. On the next play the Eagles lost possession of the ball due to a fumble. Creighton picked up a first down when Davids ran for 25 yds. From there they went nowhere and were forced to punt. O’Neill drove from their own 32 to the Bulldogs 28 before they lost the ball t nee again, this time on a fumble by Terry Kurtz. In this drive Kurtz completed two of his many aerials of the eve ning, one to Schmeichel for 8 yds and another to Hill for 5 yds. Curt Larson had a 24 yd run in this drive. Larson suffered an injury to the elbow on the run and was sidelined for the rest of the game. Creighton took the ball and moved to the O’Neill 28 yard line before Steve Peterson recovered a fumble for the Eagles. From there O’Neill drove to paydirt wdth Kurtz throwing and McGinn, Havranek and Kilcoin running. The touchdown came on a 10 yd pass from Kurtz to Kilcoin stand ing in the end zone. The extra point try failed and O’Neill led midway in the second quarter 6-0. Rick Devall recovered a fum ble to stop the Bulldogs offensive moves on the Eagle 35 yd line. With Jerry Kilcoin and Jack Mc Ginn picking up good yardage, OHS moved to the Creighton 1 yd. line. Another fumble stopped the Eagles drive. The Bulldogs were unable to move and Mike Hand recovered another Creighton fumble. This gave the Eagles a first and goal on the I yd line. Kurtz took the ball in on a quarterback sneak and a pass play for the extra point gave O’Neill a 13-0 lead at half time. Fumbles told the story of the first half. OHS kicked off to Creighton to start the second half and the Eagles looked like a much im proved ball club.They forced the Creighton boys to punt and from there they drove 43 yds to score. Highlights of the drive were a 22 yard run by Kilcoin and the 17 yard TD pass from Kurtz to Hill. Jack McGinn got the extra point and the Eagles led 20-0. Creighton was again forced to punt and on the first play Terry Kurtz threw to Kilcoin who raced 67 yds to score standing up. Mc Ginn once again nudged over the extra print and the Eagles led at the end of the 3rd quarter 27-0. In the fourth quarter OHS play ed reserves and were mostly on the defensive end The Bulking* went into a spread offense and drove to the O’Neill one foot line before the Eagles held From there Don Havranek got O’Neill out of the danger lone as he ran to the Eagle 14 yard line They couldn't move from there and punted to the 45 yd. line. Creigh ton’s spread was once again halt ed when Don Havranek intercept ed a pass and the game ended with O'Neill on top 27-0 Sieve Peterson, Jack McGinn and Rick Devail all did a fine job on defense. Mike Fletcher, first string tackle was lost for the season because of a br ken foot. Friday night O’Neill travels to Ainsworth to take on the Bu!!d g. If O’Neill wins they will be cham pions of the Eastern Division < f the Rangeland conference. The i-eserves play Neiigh here on Monday. Lynch Church Is Host to Zone Rally LYNCH Christ Lutheran church was host Sunday at a Zone 7 Sunday School Teachers rally with 10 churches repre sented. Delegates were present from Fairfax, Butte, Burton, Jamison, Atkinson, Ainsworth, Chambers, O'Neill, Spencer and Lynch. Jamison had the largest group attending. The devotions were given by Pastor Burgdorf. Pastor Neu man. Jamison, addressed the group, and Pastor Roten, Cham bers conducted the business meeting. Women of the Lynch church served the dinner and also refreshments following the eve ning program. Attending from Lynch were Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Micanek, Gloria Retzlaff, Mrs. Arthur Retzlnff. James Erlenbusch and Mrs. Jake Erlenbusch. Inman Juniors Name Officers INMAN — Bill Coventry has been elected president of the junior class. Other officers are Joe Harte, vice president; Rich ard Keil, secretary, and Patty Morrow, treasurer. October 20 is the date for the annual program to be presented by the sixth, seventh and eighth grade students. There are 12 boys and 14 girls in these grades. Auctioneers Ed Thorin, Roy Kirwan, C huck Mahony and Cieorge Oilman cried the sale fur Taveoaer. The sale, advertised in the Frontier’s one-stop service, drew a large crowd of buyers. Smorgasbord At Orchard Attended By 700 Persons ORCHARD — An estimated 700 persons attended the smorgas bord served by the Lutheran aid at St. Peter's English Lutheran church in Orchard Tuesday eve ning. t Among the quantities of food consumed were 195 pounds of turkey, 125 pounds ham, 45 chickens, 10 gallons baked beans, 130 pounds potatoes, 1 bushel carrots, 20 dozen deviled eggs, 15 pounds peas, 40 loaves fancy bread, 40 dozen homemade rolls and numerous other items. Mrs. Herman Ennen is presi dent of the Aid. Mrs. John Deines headed the serving committee as sisted by Mrs. Bernard Schacbt and Mrs. Ed Sukup. Hostesses were Mmes. Walter Seefeldt.
