Eight-Game Schedule Planned for Verdigre YEKDICrKE — Harold Nott, Verdigne's coacli, has announced that the Verdigre Hawks will have an eight-game sch<-Chile this coming school year. The schedule is as follows: Sep teratoer 3, Osmond, there; 15, Ce dar Hapids, there; 22, Niobrara, here; 23, Na<per, there; October 6, Lynch, here; 13, Spencer, there; 20, Wausa, here, and 25, Butte, here. The Wausa Vikings are a new addition to the schedule. First football practice is slated for Monday. All games will be played under lights in the home ball grounds. Yanks Win Over Tigers Seven extra innings were play ed Thursday night when the Yankees beat the Tigers 6 to 5. Verzal was winning pitcher and Hesson was loser. Aquatic Show Slated Sunday At O'Neill Pool Persons driving by the O’Neill Swimming Pool these days might not be able to closely observe the swimming and diving form of the many young people there as the water no doubt is splashing high and wide as they prepar e for the Aquatic Show Sunday at 7:30 p.m. There is no charge for the show and the public, parents especial ly, is invited to attend. Chuck Smith will handle the program and will be assisted by Swim ming Pool personnel. Volunteer businessmen will also assist. Cer tificates of award will be present ed. O'Neill Midgets West O’Neill midgets Monday night dropjied East O’Neill 7-2 at Atkinson to win the Elkhorn Val ley League play-off title and run their string of consecutive out-of town wins to 50 games. West broke a scoreless tie in the fourth after Spittler reached first on an error, Booth singled and both runners advanced a base on a bad pitch. Russ John son singled 9pittler home and Cronin followed with a double to score Booth and Johnson. In the top of the fifth Dale French’s team threatened when Casey Tomlinson was walked, Rick Cradit gained first on an error and Roy Johnson cracked a sharp single that went through the left field to score Tomlinson anti Johnson. West manager Jer ry Schmidt lifted Pitcher Bob Riley and inserted Russ Johnson who struck out the next two bat ters to retire the side and end the scoring. West O’Neill collected four more runs later, one off Russ Johnson’s homer with bases em pty. Bob Riley got credit for the win while Rick Cradit took the loss. Following the game West O’ Neill players presented Manager Jerry Schmidt with an electric raczor after a season in which he led them to the City League championship as well as the Elk horn Valley title. Ewing tipped Emmet, 3-2, Mop day night to win the consolation game. East O'Neill beat Atkinson 4-0 to gain the finals of the playoff while West O’Neill stopped Spen cer 8-1 in the semi-finals. Stoltenberg, Naper, night speeding, fined $15 and costs. Barton Family Members Hold 44th Get-together ORCHARD — The 44th annual reunion of the descendants of Si lus R. and Lydia R. Barton was held in the park at Creighton August 6 with 66 members and 7 visitors present. Claude Elloit was elected presi dent; Wendell Barton, vice presi dent; Gladys Trussel, treasurer, and Carrie Hill, secretary. There were no deaths recorded during the past year. One wed ding and five births occurred. Annual Livestock Show August 26 At Newport NEWPORT — The third annual Nebraska Sandhill National 4-H and FFA Livestock show will be held Saturday, Aug. 26, at New port. Livestock judging contest starts at 9 a.m. and the livestock show will begin at 10 a.m. There will be a “kid’s ” parade at 1 p.m., and prizes will be awarded to the best entry by youngsters of pre-school to eighth grade age. There will be cash awards total ing $200 for the winners in the open class for fat steers. Twenty trophies will be given, 9 for traveling prizes, and 13 indivi dual awards. Jim Seger, Newport, is in charge of arrangements and will provide further information to interested persons. County Agent Gene Newton will also be avail able for information. Judges will be C. W. Nibler, Extension Dairyman from the University of Nebraska Agricul ture college, and Leland Hansen, Wavne. It's a Small World Elmer Grim, Ewing, has a private mail service which worked out just fine. When he stopped at the Ew ing Texaco station last week he was handed a card written by his son, Jerold, who lives in Washington state. The card was left at the sta tion by a tourist who had visited with jerold before leaving on a vacation through Nebraska. Daughter and Family In Bus-Truck Mishap Mrs. Delbert Hiekemier and family, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Grosse, suffered minor cuts and bruises Friday when the bus in which they were riding collided with a truck near Oma ha. The Hiekemiers were enroute from Canada to Florida when the accident occurred. Mr. Hieke mier will be stationed in the air force in Florida. They are visit ing at the present time in the Grosse home before continuing their trip. Neil Dawes and Family to Be Honored Sunday A covered dish dinner will be held Sunday for County Agent Neil Daw’es and his family who will be moving in the near future to Fairbury where Mr. Dawes has accepted the county agent position for Jefferson county. The dinner wall start at 1:30 p.m. The committee is asking that families bring a covered dish, table service and a drink for the youngsters. Coffee will be fur nished. V Albert McDonalds Attend Their Son's Weddinq Held in Indiana Mr. and Mrs. Albert McDonald and Kathleen left Monday for Crown Point, Ind. to attend the wedding of their oldest son, Ilan, to Miss Rose Marie Stroup. They will be guests at the home of the W. L. Stroups. The wedding will take place at the Presbyterian church at Crown Point August 20 at 2 p.m. Miss Kathleen Mc Donald will be the organist. The Jolly 17 Baking class 4-H girls held a regular meeting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ho mer 'Grimm Friday at 2 p. m. The ffirls made a butterscotch pie for their lesson. Alpha Grimm demonstrated the making of an angel food cake The next meeting will be held at the Glen Rihanek home Aug ust 17 at 2 p.m. The books are to be finished at this time in pre paration for fair exhibition at Spencer August 28-29-30. Randy Havranek, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Havranek, is spending this week at the home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Halva. Mr. and Mrs. George Courtney jr. and family, Lincoln were weekend guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Courtney sr. Six local girls attended retreat at the Assumption Academy in Norfolk August 5-8. Father Jo seph Elkhorn was retreat mas ter. Mr. Walter Hilmer was an army buddy of Robert Conklin. The Robert Conklins visited at the Paul Reel home in Spencer Sat urday evening. Mrs. Ralph Titus and Bonnie, Rapid City, S. Mr. and Mrs. McDon ald visited there before going on to their son’s wedding. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Schommer and son, Chadron, arrived Satur day for a week’s vacation at the Jake Birmieir home. Joan Bir mieir accompanied them home. She has been there for a month helping care for the baby while Mrs. Schommer does beauty work. Russell Sutliff drove to Norfolk and Randolph Wednesday. He vis ited his uncle, Spin Roberts at Randolph. Several neighbors and friends gathered at the Lewie Christian sen home Monday night in hon or of Mr. Christensen’s birth day. The Rev. Mr. Dominik, Chicago, 111., has spent the past two weeks with the Rev. Charles Kamber. The Rev Robert Steinhausen, Spencer, has been a patient at Lynch hospital for two weeks. Fa ther Kamber has been in charge of St. Mary’s Catholic church in Spencer during his illness. Fa ther Dominik had charge of the Assumption BVM church at Lynch during this time. On Aug ust 13 devotions were conducted in the Assumption BVM Catholic church by Father McNally, Nio brara. Mrs. Grace Edson and Jill Al len returned by bus Wednesday from Omaha and Denver where they have been visiting relatives. Madeline Peklo has been visit ing in Omaha and returned home Wednesday. Y., and Donna Wragge, Norfolk, were Thursday visitors at the Burtwistle home. Race is a for mer employee at the Burtwistle ranch. The congregation of the Church of Christ, Ewing, lield a picnic at the home of Mrs. Eula Eppen bach Sunday with 40 in atten dance. The dinner was served on the lawn.
