With production testing records, you need to record the
date of birth on each calf. By using a tattoo or other mark
ing system, you can then identify a calf throughout its life
and know its genetic background by having a cross refer
ence to sire and dam. This is just one phase in the produc- x
tion testing program but it's essential for figuring relative
mothering ability of cow and potential value of sire.

PRODUCTION
Below, birth weight of calves is an important measure of
expected future performance. It affects weaning weight,
final feedlot weight and gains while on feed. Studies by
USDA researchers show birth weight is about 41% in
herited. Thus, it's an important measure in selecting breed
ing herd replacements. To check birth weights in the field,
use a set of bathroom scales. Pick up the calf and step on
the scales. Then deduct your weight. This gives the net
weight of the calf.
To get a measure of an animal's performance during the
nursing period, the calf should be weighed when weaned.
Since all calves are not of the same identical age when
weighed, you'll need to make some adjustments. College
extension specialists have guides that can be used for this.
You'll also need to make weight adjustments for sex of the
calf and age of its mother. You'll find that weaning weight
increases greatly as a cow gets older. To give an accurate
figure for comparing all animals in your herd, these ad
justments must be made.
