Carpenter Supper guests in the Robert Ollendick home Sunday included Mr. and Mrs. Joe Ollendick sr., and Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Gib son and son of Chambers, Mr. and Mrs. James Ollendick and son Jimmie, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Ollendick jr., and family of O’ Neill. The occasion was in honor of the birthdays of Joe Ollendick sr., and Robert Ollendick. Twenty American Legion Auxi liary members and several visi tors were present Friday eve ning at the home of Mrs. W. H. Crawford for the "Gold Star Tea.” The tables were decorated in white and gold candles and stars with the word "mother” in gold letters down the center. Mrs. Crawford and Mrs. Edwin Hub bard were in charge of the pro grant which consisted of musical numbers, poems, talks and a skit, all of which expressed honor to the mothers. There was a short business ses sion with the president, Mrs. Edd Coday, presiding. Letters of appreciation for articles sent to the Veterans hospital and for money sent to the Leonard Wood memorial were read. There was a discussion of plans for Mem orial day and for a Poppy win dow display. The county meet ing in O’Neill May 22 was men tioned. The meeting closed with a song by the group and a prayer by the chaplin. Open house was held at the Chambers school May 10 start ing at 6:45 p.m. There was a fine disnlav of work in each of tho elementary rooms and in the Legion hall whefe some of the classes are being held. The high school exhibits were in the gymnasium. Mr. and Mrs. James Grimes went to St. Edward Thursday afternoon where they joined Mr. and Mrs. Ellis and went to Kansas City, Mo., to visit their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Milton Grimes and children. Mrs. Milton Grimes is a daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Ellis of St. Edward. The Grimes restumed Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Rock Baughn of BrooKings, Ore., are visiting her mother, Mrs. John Wintermote and brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Gaius Wintermote. Mrs. Stanley Jarman of Ft. Col lins came a few days ago to help care for her husband’s mother, Mrs. Wood Jarman, who is a patient at St. Anthony’s hos pital in O’Neill. The Prairie Maids 4-H club met at the home of Judy Smith the evening of April 27. Four mem bers were present. The meeting was called to order by the vice president, Mary Jane Fleek. Roll call was answered and minutes of the last meeting read and ap proved. The leader, Mrs. Wayne Smith, told about the speech contest to be held soon. Susan Thomson and Donis Hoffman gave a demonstration of making a fruit bowl. The leader discus sed choosing material for sewing projects. The hostess served lunch.—Donis Hoffman, reporter. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Hoffman at tended a reunion of the Skinner families held at Edgar April 30. Sixty relatives were present from Lincoln, Beatrice, Superior and other places in eastern Neb. The Hoffmans aso visited rela tives in Superior. The Skinner family is Mrs. Hoffman’s mo ther’s people. The four children of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Custard of Manley have spent the past several weeks in the Ray, Bernard and Donald Hoffman homes. Their mother, the former Marian Hoff man underwent major surgery at | Bryan Memorial hospital in Lin coln recently. Mrs. Custard is now home and the family is moving to Ashland. The children mu lcuiaui iidvr uuui atuuui 10 out as the boys are attending school at the Martha school where Mrs. Ray Hoffman is teacher. Mr. and Mrs. James Platt left Sunday for Anchorage, Alaska. They took the car be longing to their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Larry Lieswald, to them and will re main for a week’s visit. Lies wald is in the armed service and stationed at Anchorage since December. Mrs. Mary Niemand spent last week in O’Neill visiting in the Carl Lorenz home and with her granddaughter, Mrs. Carlyle Strong and family. Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Cooper of Winner, S. D., came Saturday evening and spent until Monday with his sister, Mrs. Hattie Tib bets. On Thursday afternoon the Wo man’s Society of Christian Ser vice met at the Methodist church for a special pledge service. The Spiritual Life secretary, Mrs. E. R. Carpenter, led a short prayer service preceding the lesson. Mrs. G. H. Adams conducted the worship and Mrs. A. B. Hubbard presented the lesson on “Our * Threefold Pledge.” She was ■ assisted by Mrs. Raymond Shoe maker, Mrs. Darrell Gillette and Mrs. Steve Shavlik, with Mrs. T. E. Alderson as pianist. The presi dent, Mrs. Gaius Wintermote, presided at the business session. It was decided to go to Clear water May 16 to attend officers training. Mrs. Bruce Grimes, , Mrs. Shoemaker and the president gave reports. She also announced that there would be a memorial service for a deceased member, Mrs. Mary Harvey, and the in stallation of officers at the next meeting May 18. There were 23 members, and one visitor pre sent The meeting closed with prayer. Lunch was served by Mrs. Charles Grimes and Mrs. Bruce Grimes. .; Cancer Drive Chairman, Mrs. Kenneth Werner reports $232.34 collected during the recent drive. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Fangman of York were weekend guests of their daughter, Mrs. Bernard Hoffman and family. Mrs. Hoff man accompanied them back to York and from there went on to Ashland to help her sister-in-law, Mrs. Dan Custard and family - get moved and settled in their new home . A prenuptial shower, honoring Miss Sheila Hertel, will be held at the Bethany Presbyterian church Thursday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Fred DeHart and Mr. and Mrs. Edgar DeHart were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Schtt Mr. and Mrs Everett Jarman and Douglas entertained the members of the senior class of which Douglas is a member, at dinner. Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Hanna of Chambers and Mr. and Mrs. Art McLain of Bartlett visited friends at Kearney Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Papke and family and Mr. and Mrs. A1 Rockford and children were Sat urday evening callers in the Vem Wilkinson home. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Whiddon of Bonesteel, S. D., and Mrs. Jim Klasna of Spencer visited their mother, Mrs. Whidden, and sis ter, Mrs. Ralph Blair Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Watson and Lyle Hanna assisted Vem Wil kinson in moving cattle to pas ture Monday. Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Carpenter were Sunday dinner guests of their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Dean Stevens and family at Atkinson. Forty-five relatives and friends gathered at the home of Mrs. Charlotte. Haneywelt Sunday to help her celebrate her 94th birthday anniversary. The guests came from Wahoo, Fremont, Neligh, Ewing and Chambers. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Bieriele and Randy of Columbus came Sunday to get their two children who had I been staying with their grand mother, Mrs. Paul Roth. Randy underwent surgery two weeks ago. Mr. and Mrs. L. V. Cooper went to Grand Island Sunday to attend a postmasters’ convention. They returned Wednesday. The Chambers community was blessed with a rainfall amounting to lYt inches Fri day and Saturday night. Donis and Bruce Hoffman are staying in the Evelyn Robertson home while their mother is as sisting the Dan Custard family at Ashland. Kevin Hoffman is at tne tsob Beed home. Mr. and Mrs. Lester McKay of Clearwater were dinner guests of his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Ollendick sr. Mrs. Harold Dexter and two girls were Saturday visitors in the Darrell Gillette home. Mrs. Dexter and girls are visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Hoffman for a few weeks. From there she will go to Hawaii to join her husband who is with the U. S. Navy. Mrs. Wayne Karr of Blanding, Utah underwent surgery April 28 in a hospital in Salt Lake City to correct a collapsed disc in her back. Mrs. Karris remembered here as Doris Hemenway, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Hemenway. Hemenway. She will be hospi talized several weeks, and a line or two from old friends would help. WSCS of the Methodist church met Thursday with Mrs. Jack Middleton. Mrs. Howard Luben was co-hostess. Fourteen mem bers were present. The program “To Give With Joy” was pre sen ted by Mrs. Lyle Switzer, as sisted by Mrs, Howard Luben, Mrs. Harold Loewe, Mrs. Lloyd Hixson and Mrs. Wayne Switzer. The pledge service was con ducted by Mrs. Douglas Hemen way, Mrs. Woodrow Elliott and Mrs. Amos Siwtzer. Mrs. Lyle Switzer conducted the business meeting. Plans were made for a WSCS workshop to bo held at the Clearwater church May 23. Societies from the Neligh, Page, Ewing, Royal, Chaml>ers and the Clearwater church will be guests. Plans also were completed for a food sale to be held May 13 at the Legion hall. New officers for the coming year were installed by Mrs. Woodrow Elliott. Lawrence Schnabel was able to return to his home Sunday af ternoon after a weeks stay in Antelope' Memorial hospital in Neligh. He will be in bed for another week at home, but is getting along fine. The band mo thers served a lunch after the concerts. Those who participated in the concerts presented their selections at the Grade Regional Music Contest in Platte Friday. They received 17 superior ratings, 26 excellent ratings and 5 good ratings. Jerry Kirwan was one of the drivers who took a group of Picks town high school seniors to the Black Hills on “Skip Day.” They left Thursday afternoon and re turned Sunday evening.
