Verdigre News By Vac Itanda Levy of $1,000 Settled on Rural Fire District At the annual meeting held Thursday night in the local fire house for the Verdigre Rural Fire Protection Dist., a levy of $1,000 was voted, double the amount for I960. A petition was approved to enter Washington and Western townships and part of Walnut Grove township into the Verdigre fire district. Hearing on the mat ter will be held in Center at the Knox county courthouse May 22. Emil Kocian was re-elected presi dent of the Fire district. The Verdigre Methodist Church vacation school will open May 22 and continue until May 27. Ses sions will be conducted from 9:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Children ages four to high school who wish to attend arc welcome, according to Mrs. Otto Uhlir, Sunday school superintendent. Jonele Jacot, who teaches in school District 27, eight miles west of Verdigre in the Jelen vicinity, held a spring party and program for the women of this rural dis trict Friday afternoon. The pro gram consisted of musical num bers and recitations by her seven pupils and the guests numbered twenty-two. The women, after the school program, surprised Miss Jacot with a kitchen shower and many recipes, since she is a bride-to-be. She opened her gifts and lunch was served. The Verdigre rural fire truck was called Thursday at 1:20 p.m. to fight a chimney fire at the Raymond Sukup farm home. The fireman did not get to town until 3 p.m. The farm is nine miles southwest of Ver digre in the Walnut vicinity. On May 14 the St. Wenceslaus Catholic church will observe St. John’s Day. Masses will be at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. which will be celebrated by the Rev. Charles J. Oborny and visiting clergy. The festival will include services at the church and a public cafe teria luncheon in the St. Wences laus auditorium at noon. At the local Methodist Church Sunday school, Family Week will be observed Sunday at 9 a.m. at the regular church service as there will be no Sunday school classes that morning.
