Niobrara Nips
St. Mary's 80-54
The St. Mary’s Cardinals tra
veled to Niobrara Tuesday, Dee.
20. where they received their
second loss in five games.
Niobrara, relying heavily on
Kenny Liska, took the lead early
and never relinquished it, to run
up a 80-54 victory. St. Mary’s
only had three players who could
find the net. Mudloff led St.
Mary’s scorers with 20 points.
In the first quarter the Cardi
nals, led by Spitzenberger, whose
final tally was 16, and M!adloff
pressed the Lions but Niobrara
still led at the end of the first
quarter 16-12.
The second quarter showed Ni
obrara strengthening its lead by
potting 20 points. Kenny Liska,
the Niobrara stalwart who wps
on the all-state class C team last
year, proved to foe the Cardinals
undoing as he scored 29 points
and grabbed so many rebounds
that the St. Mary’s team could
manage only 11 offensive re
bounds all night. Half time score
was 36-23.
The third quarter proved to foe
more interesting as St. Mary’s
scored 17 points to the Lions 18.
Niobrara, however, paced by Lis
ka’s 11 points in the period pro
tected their lead and led at the
end of the third quarter 54-40.
The fourth quarter showed Ni
obrara really showing their su
periority by dropping in 26 points
to take an insurmountable lead.
Raqaitm
Tommy Wanser’s four points in
an overtime put St. Mary’s ahead
with seconds to go and St. Mary’s
held on to take a 40-39 win over
the Niobrara reserves. Regulation
time ended at 45 all.
St. Mary’s was paced by Jerry
Oetter’s 15 points, 14 of them in
the first half, followed by Pruss
with 6. Niobrara’s scoring was
centered around two men, Burns,
who had 17, and Hanzlik with 13.
