Mil ler of Clearwater celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Sun day, Oct. 4 at the Concordia Lutheran parish hall. The Millers were married June 15, 1910 hut waited to observe their fiftieth anniversary because of recent illness in the family. Mr. and Mrs. Miller were married at Clearwater. Their attendants were Mrs. Miller's brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Hildebrand of Seattle, Wash. They were not present for the festivities. Mrs. Miller, the former Miss Edna Hildebrand, moved to Clearwater as a small child. Mr. Miller was born and reared at Clearwater. They have spent their entire married life there. Mr. and Mrs. Miller are the parents of two daughters, Miss Audrey Miller and Mrs. Tom Hickey, both of Lincoln. They were hostesses at the celebration. Mrs. Guy Miller registered the guests. Mrs. Wallace Twiss cut and served the cake. Mrs. Hal Thompson and Mrs. Richard Kallhoff were in charge of the gift table. One hundred guests were present. Mr. Miller has been a Clear water banker for over fifty years. He has been a member of the Village Board of Trustees and the Board of Education for many years. Carolyn Groeling Shower Honoree VERDIGRE Miss Carolyn Groeling was honored at a bridal shower Tuesday. Oct. 4 at the Bethlehem Lutheran church here. The evening was spent making a “Memory Scrapbook” for the bride-to-be. Games were played and each of the fifty-six guests contributed a favorite recipe to a file for the guest of honor. Geraleen Sokol, Marcia Liska, Patricia Vokner and Mrs. Her man W. Block assisted with the gifts. Hostesses were Mrs. Rich ard Miller, Mrs George Mott, Mrs. Jimmie Mott and Mrs. Herman Block. Shower Honors Leona Underwood A pre-nuptial shower was held Sunday afternoon in the home of Mrs. Henrietta Underwood in honor of her daughter, Leona’s approaching marriage to Lavern Starmann of Elgin October 22 in St. Patrick’s Catholic church. Mrs. Francis McDermott and Mrs. Juliana Kamphaus were in charge of the entertainment. Con test games were played and prizes awarded. Mrs. Anna Don lin received the door prize. All other prizes were given to the honoree. Mary Margaret Starmann as sisted with the gifts and was in charge of the gift book. Out of town guests were Mrs. Francis McDermott and child ren of Osmond and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Beck and Mary Margaret Starmann, all of Elgin. Band Boosters Elect Officers The O'Neill Band Boosters met in the band room of the O’Neill public school Thursday evening for their fall meeting. Mrs. Leo Gokie, retiring presi dent. conducted the business meeting. Mrs. John Stuifbergen, chairman of the uniform com mittee, reported that all uni forms have been catalogued ac cording to size and that all have covers Six new uniforms were purchased last year and seventeen new uniform covers were made Last year the city of O’Neill gave the band $1,000 which has been invested in bonds. This money will be used to purchase new uniforms when they are needed. The O’Neill Band Boos ters represent persons interested in both the O’Neill high school hand and St. Mary’s Academy band. The bands march jointly as the O'Neill band. A band trip was discussed. Mrs W. B Gillespie was elect ed president of the organization. Other officers elected were Mrs. Floyd Wilson, vice-president: Mrs. Joe Bartos, secretary and Mrs. Joe Dufek. treasurer. Mrs. Gillespie named the uni form committee and board mem liers for the year. Now board members for a two-year term are Mmes. Rex Wilson, James Corkle, Charles Fox, sr., and Ixsi Gokie. Members continuing for one year are Mmes. Ray Bosn, Virgil Tomlinson, Joe Stutz and Don Franklin. Retiring members include Mmes. Leona Shoemaker. Melvin Marcellus, Maurice Cavanaugh and Virgil Laursen. The new uniform committee in cludes Mmes Leigh Reynoldson, chairman: Henry Lohaus, Lau rence Haynes and Norman Gon deringer. Those on last year’s committee were Mmes. John Stuifbergen. The O’Neill band presented a half-time show at the O'Neill Creighton football game Friday evening, Oct. 7. They also assist ed with the crowning activities. The hand will march again for the St. Mary’s Academy game October 20 and the O’Neill high c*amp October 21. Holliday Marry In Orchard The marriage of Miss Fonda Rae Menning and Wayne Lavem Holliday, both of Orchard, was solemnized Friday, Sept. 30, at the Evangelical United Brethren church in Orchard. The Rev. Duane Lenz performed the 7 p m. ceremony. The bride’s parents are Mr. and Mrs. Charles Menning and Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Holliday are the parents of the bridegroom. All live in Orchard. Mrs. Floyd Menning and Har vey Holbrook, jr. of Orchard were the soloists accompanied by Mrs. Harvey Holbrook, sr., at the organ. Mrs. Bernard Pongratz presid ed at the business meeting. Plans for a food sale and bazaar on October 29 were made. Mrs. John Kersenbrock will be the new pres ident. Other officers were relect ed. VFW Auxiliary Elects Mrs. Brown President Tlhe VFW auxiliary of post 926 met Tuesday evening at the Holt county courthouse assembly room with thirteen members present Mrs. George Morlang, senior vice-president, conducted the business meeting. Four new mem bers were accepted. Mrs. Anna Brown was elected president to replace Mrs. Otto Sprague who resigned recently Mrs. Morlang installed Mrs. Brown. The auxiliary plans a pot luck supper with the VFW post 926 on November 11. The auxiliary has a membership of over 100 per cent for the year. A notification was received that the auxiliary has received a ci tation from the Carol Lane awards. A costume Halloween party will be held October 27 at the home of Mrs. Ray Tucker. A lunch was served following the meeting. Dawsons Will Speak Monday At Meeting The Rev. and Mrs. Dawson J. Park will speak at the joint WSGS and Wesleyan Service Guild meet ing at the First Methodist church Monday, Oct. 17 at 8 p.m. The Rev. Park is associate di rector of the Nebraska Temper ance League and will speak on the work and the league conducts throughout the state. The league is an inter-church organization for education about alcoholic bevera ges, narcotics and tobacco. The Rev. Park holds degrees from Nebraska Wesleyan University and Drew Seminary and has been a Methodist minister for thirty years. The public is invited to attend. Legion Auxiliary Meets Wednesday The regular meeting of the American Legion auxiliary, Sim onson post 93 was held at the Le gion hall on Wednesday, Oct. 5. One hundred and forty mem bers have paid their dues for 1951. Mrs. Jack Davidson gave a report on the District Two con vention which was held at Wausa The local unit was awarded $5.00 for awards in the history book and corsage contests. $25.00 was donated to the Bingo fund for the Veteran’s hospitals. Mrs. John Davidson, Mrs. Verne Reynoldson and Mrs. Archie Bright were appointed to the menu committee for county gov ernment day which will be held in O'Neill on Monday, Oct. 31. Rebekahs Have Auction The Eden Rebekah lodge met Friday evening at the IOOF hall for their regular meeting. A white elephant auction was held following the meeting. Eager Beavers Club Elects New Officers Gwenda Schultz was elected president of the Eager Beavers 4-H Weed clulb at their Septem ber organization meeting which was held at district 33. The following officers wero elected: Mrs. Arthur O’Neill leader; Janet Vequist, vice-pres ident; Cindy Brown, treasurer; Terry Brown, news reporter; Jimmy Widtfeldt, game leader; Trudy Schultz, secretary. The meetings will be held the first Monday of every school month. The club was organized for the purpose of learning tc identify Nebraska weeds and how to control them. Our first project is to make a weed press. Every one is to contribute weeds for the press. Each one is to mount weed seeds and be able to identify them at roll call at the next meet ing. He is also a baseball fan and enjoys watching baseball games on TV. Mrs Krugman. 71. does crochet ing and has made many pillow tops with punchwork designs. She is a member of the Lutheran Ladies Aid and both have been life-long members of the Lutheran church. Mr Krugman was one of the first 4-H club leaders in the county. One year the Scottville 4-H club with 21 members won 17 ribbons at the fair. Mr. Krug man related an experience they had in February 1949. They came to O’Neill to get supplies and money to pay the school teacher of the district. Before they were able to make the return trip the roads drifted shut again and they were forced to seek shelter at the Bill Murphy ranch home. Twenty three persons spent that night there. The next day they were able to attract the attention of an army weasel which was being used to assist snowbound ran.hers. Thev were eiven a ride home in the weasel. The Krugman home was also a haven for strand ed truck drivers and others dur ing the blizzards of 1948-49. Mr. and Mrs. Krugman receiv ed a telephone call from their nephew, Karl Krugman in Albany, N. Y. The children presented each with a gold watch.
