(Lost in a Sorias on tho Declaration of Indepandancai
“we hold these tcuths to se self-evident..
In all of their writings the Founding Fathers displayed a deep fear of
strong government, and they intended that it should be held under centred.
Washington said: ‘Government is like fire — a dangerous servant,
a fearful master."
Jefferson said: "Free government is founded in jealousy and not in confidence.
In questions of power, then, let no more be heard of confidence in man,
but bind him down from mischief by the chains of the Constitution."
The architects of the Declaration of Independence intended that government
be the servant of man, not his master "We hold these truths to be
self-evident, that all men are created equal and endowed by their Creator with
certain inalienable rights, among which are life, liberty and the pursuit of
happiness, that to secure these rights governments are instituted among men,
deriving their just powers from the consent of the gooemed."
This final cornerstone of American government set forth the truth
that government can have no greater rights than the people because its power
comes from the people, and the people can take away that power.
The American system of government is based on the noblest of principles
and ideals. It is the only system under which freedom has been able to flourish
because its foundations are the Cod-given rights of man.
