By Catherine Imlra Home Extension Agent With the coming of fall and school, many homemakers turn their talents to dressmaking. The question of lining or not lining a garment often comes up Is lining really necessary or will I have a satisfactory garment without it. Lining gives shape and body to many of today s garments al though a few years ago it was used only to cover up seams and other construction details in a coat or suit. More and more of the ready-to wear dresses and skirts are lined, considering the fabric and the design or pattern style. First, consider the fabric. If it is loosely woven and has a ten dency to stretch, it may need the support of a light weight, firmly woven lining. Lightweight fabric, such as chiffon, will be given body and shape with the use of lining. Laces need linings, too, for appearance as well as body When considering the pattern style, a sheath dress may be im proved by the use of a lining. A skirt with a peg top needs lining for effect. Some dresses with bodices nead a lining to keep the fullness just right and in place. Large collars need a lining or interfacing to give them shape and make them mold. The cleaning care needed by a lined garment also should ne taken into consideration. If it is to be laundered, the lining should require similar washings and ironing techniques so that the two fabrics will shrink in the same way. "Keep the purposes of lining in mind before lining a garment," Suitable lining or interfacing fabrics used in making clothes will vary with the garment fabric. Line a wool skirt with rayon twill, lightweight taffeta, flat crepe or other fabrics designed especially for linings. These fabrics aren't bulky and yet are firm enough to keep the garment from stretching. Linings may be sewed into seams or sewed separately and slip stitched to seams. It is pro bably best to hem separately be cause woven wool and rayon drape differently. Some possibilities for lining sheaths—which require a soft type of lining—are rayon sheath linings, batiste, dacron and cot ton blends and lawn—or new ones as sheer-de-swa, veri and seri. Select China silk or marquisette for more elegant fabrics. For smooth sheath lines, choose a soft fabric; to give shape choose a crisper fabric. "Interfacings for special design details can make the difference between a professional - looking garment and a home-made look ing one.” I Chambers News By Mrs. E. It.
