"The Voice of the Beef Empire"-North-Central Nebraska's BIGGEST Newspaper Volume 80-Number 13 O'Neill, Holt County, Nebraska, Thursday, July 21, I960 Seven Cents _ Biscuits, Bones Pay Baby Sitter For This Family Would you like to be able to pay your baby sitter with dog biscuits? The Duane Miller’s at Cham bers do just that What’s more they get the biscuits wholesale. Mr Miller runs the grocery store. The baby sitter is Lassie, a beautifi.il buff and white collie. "I wouldn’t go so far as to say she really baby sits, now." says Mrs. Miller. Diana, almost six, Norm four and Ken three, all enthusiaticully agree. (You can't call folks that age babies, for goodness sake!) Lassie just smi les knowingly, as she watches them from the corner of her eye. Mr. Miller, who has been in business in Chambers since 1952 purchased Lassie as a compan ion for his children 2'v years ago. Instead of a pet she be came a protector as well as a loved member of the family. “She is with the children con stantly." Mrs. Miler says. “When they were smaller she kept them from straying from the yard by barking and gentle nudges." She will not allow her small charges near the power mower. They are supervised at home by this fur ry mother’s helper and when they travel guess who is in the car first? Once Lassie was stolen. The family was visiting relatives at Chadron. One day the collie was missing. After two days of fruit less searching the Millers were forced to leave for home "Bro ken hearted because our Lassie was gone." Two days later a scratching was heard at the Cha dron hi me aixi a hungry, tired footsore dog appeared. She had evidently slii*ped a chain because the hair on her beautiful ruff was worn off and had come back seeking her family. A telephone call brought Mr. Miller on the double to return the lost one to a reception committee of three eagerly waiting children and their mother. Would they sell Lassie? The children looked horrified. Young as they are they realize that love and devotion is something money can’t buy.
