For I saw with dismay that the grave, sweet face seemed sudden ly worn tonight; Seemed suddenly shadowed and very tired, 1 wondered if it could be That some of the shadows had deeper grown because of her care for me. And some way I had not noticed before, the dear hands so sel dom still, But tonight as she rested a little 1 studied them there at will, .And I saw that her hands were worn with toil, And I saw through my tears how true Those hands had been in their tireless task for me the long day through. And 1 wondered again if I had been more thoughtful, and had I borne A greater part of the ceaseless toil, if her hands would have been less worn. Then out of the pain of my heart there came a vow I meant to keep. For I had learned a sorrowfj] lesson there while mother was fast asleep.
