RE-WINNING
THE WEST I
Movement of the reactor vessel and containment tank
for the Hallam Nuclear Power Facility was in many
ways reminiscent of, and at ths same time, in sharp
contrast to ths westward movement of freight a century
ago
Arrival of the huge components (upper left) was via
ths Missouri river, one of ths nation’s historic "ways
west”
The freight wagons of a century ago would have been
dwarfed, however, by ths 40-wheel trailers on which the
tanks were loaded (upper right) .. .
While the pace of the trailers (center right) in their
overland movement was about ths same as a freighter
wagon—three miles an hour ...
ths terminus of the trip (lower right) was a far cry
from the pioneer villages of yesteryear.
The mode of life ... the means of transportation ...
the machines and equipment of 1960 are vastly
different from what they were a century ago when
the west was first won.
Nevertheless, Nebraskans are still pioneers . . .
pioneers of progress.
In its construction of the Hallam Nuclear Power
Facility, Consumers Public Power District is pio
neering peaceful applications of the atom . . .
applications which can win for the entire western
world new frontiers of untold social and economic
significance.
CONSUMERS S
