FIGHTING FARM FIRES A fire on the farm has always been dread ed by the Nebraska farmer living in isolation on the prairies. Nothing can really compensate a man for the loss of his home and his possessions-not even insurance in adequate amounts. During 1958 farm fires in Nebraska claim ed the lives of 13 persons, 2 of them children. They seriously injured 116 others. They de stroyed farm property worth nearly $2,000, 000.00. The toll would have been much higher _* aL. £• _I. _ £ fc. I . I_I../. WCIC II llUl l Ul me line? wuii\ wi i icwi aai\a o hundreds of volunteer firemen and fire-fight ing trucks owned by Local Fire Protection Dis tricts all over the state. The Rural Fire District idea is a simple and effective one. It provides a fair and low cost method of making available to farmers modern fire-fighting trucks and equipment especially resigned to fight farm fires. It gives farmers the opportunity to provide adequate fire-fighting units for the protection of their own property and the lives of their families. In the past ten years great strides have been made in the Rural Fire District movement. In 1949 the Nebraska Legislature passed a Rural Fire District law which greatly strengthened and improved the methods of forming such Dis tricts. Today, over 300 Rural Fire Districts have been organized in the State. Farmers Mutual Insurance Company of Ne braska is proud to have had a part in this pro gram. During the past few years, the company has loaned over $1,275,000.00 at 1% interest to 143 Rural Fire Districts to finance the pur chase of new rural fire trucks. During the same period it has donated over $60,000.00 to local volunteer fire departments for fire protection r’ The savings in fire losses resulting from the program have been passed on to the com pany's farm members by a reduction in farm fire rates in those 54 counties classified as "rural fire protected." This has meant a saving of hundreds of thousands of dollars in fire pre miums to Nebraska's farmers over the years. The program actually pays for itself in the long run.
