I ——-——
letter from the Philllpfnes
Mr. and Mrs. Edd Charf have
received a letter from their daugh
ter Lillie (Mrs. Joseph McMillion)
whose husband is with the* navy
and who is stationed at Subic Bay.
Since Lille was reared in Royal
and is a graduate of the Royal
high school, and was a member of
two Royal dance bands, Bob Ber
ing and His Sardines, and The
Royal Nighthawks, she is well
known and her letter will be of in
terest to many friends. (Quoting
from the letter: "I was up at
Pocsonjan Hills for the weekend.
Some of the navy wives and their
husbands went up, 25 in all. Mike
couldn’t go because he had Cap
tain's Inspection. It was a beauti
ful trip. They had entertainment
at the lodge for us. Saturday night
they had a band (if you could call
it that) of all strings—a jumbled
mess, hut it was better than noth
ing and they played American
music, and the old man fiddler
could even read notes.
Sunday morning we rode up to
the falls in a banca boat. They
. are something like our canoes—
made of a tree hollowed out. Two
passengers and two boatmen are
! allowed in a boat.
At the falls was a lake with a
bamboo raft in which we rode out
: under the falls, the wall of which
was over 300 feet high. Then we
rode back on the stream over the
rapids. They call it ‘shooting the
rapids’! Am sending you a picture
of the bamboo organ we saw on the
; way up.
We also saw pineapples, coco
nuts. beetlenuts and bananas all
! grown in one orchard owned by
private millionaires who live in
Manilla.
We also saw the famous Santos
prison in Manilla which is the Far
Eastern University now and was
before the Japs made it a Hell
Hole.
There is a national cemetery
with the names of all the boys who
are buried there’.
I wish I had your sewing machine
here. I could sell it for $250 in our
money. They like the old treadle
models because so many do not
have electricity over here.”
Lillie also included a description
of the bamboo organ which was
built by Father Diego Cera in 1818.
The 950 bamboos were covered for
six months with sand from the
beach to protect them from the at
tacks of bamboo bugs.
The work was finished in 1882.
Twice the organ was badly damag
ed in 1862 by an earthquake and in
1882 by the rains as the church roof
was blown up.
In 1917 Father Faniel, a Belgian
missionary completed the repair
of the organ and later an electric
blower was installed. The organ
was repaired again in 1943. It is
kept in good condition by the offer
ing of visitors. She wrote: “A
Sister played the organ for us ”
