Chambers News By Mrs. E. H. Carpenter The senior class of the Chambers high school presented the three act, farce-comedy "Grandad Steps Out.” Friday evening, April 22 at the school gymnasium, to a full house The cast of characters in cluded Roberta Klabenes, Mary Homo Ike. Alberta Miles, Joan Ful lerton, Jeri Coday, I-arue We(ler, Ruthie Smith, Arliss Wright, Glenn Miller, Jim Kolm, Shelia Hertel, Jeanette Urban and Rachel Burrel. Mr Kenneth Weller directed the play. The between acts specials were, "Somebody loves You,” "Sugar Time," and “Jnto the Night," by high schools girls, the first two by senior girls the last by a sextette, Judy Heed was the pianist. The class presented their direc tor, Mr. Weller, w'ith a Shaffer fountain pen as a gift of apprecia tion. The Woman's Society of Christian Service met Thursday afternoon, April 21 at the Methodist church with 16 members and one visitor present. Mrs. Fred Ermer and Mrs. William Ermer were hostes ses. The meeting opened with a song call to worship and a prayer. The second portion of the study on “I-uke” was presented by Mrs. Jam ’s Grimes and Mrs. Louis Neil son with various members reading the scripture verses included in the lesson. There was a short session of routine business presided over by the president, Mrs. T. E. Newhouse. Following the meeting lunch was served by the hostesses. The next meeting is the pledge service, on May 5th, with Mrs. A. B. Hubbard as leader. Bernard Hoffman carried mail on the rural route Monday for the regular mail carrier Yemon Whita ker. The Ladies Aid of St. Paul’s Lu theran church sponsored a smorgas lx»rd at the church basement Wed nesday evening which was very well attended. An abundance of delicious food and a good time was reported. Mr. and Mrs. Edgar DeHart joined their son-in-law and daugh ter, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Theis and son of Ames, la., at the home of Mr. Theis’ parents at Winside for dinner Easter. Robert McMean, a senior at Wesleyan University at Lincoln, spoke at the Methodist churches in Cham tiers and Amelia Sunday. April 24th in the interest of the col lege. Mr and Mrs. Floy d Whitaker and son Vernon Whitaker drove to Yankton, S. D., Monday where Mrs. Whitaker consulted an eye specia list. Mr. and Mrs. Wood Jarman left Tuesday. April 19 for Julesburg. Colo., where they spent the night with his sister going on Wednesday | to visit their son and daughter-in law. Mr and Mrs. Stanley Jarman and family at Ft. Collins and Mr. | and Mrs. Clifford Jarman at Boul-1 der. Mr. and Mrs Harry Myers and family of Rapid City, S D., were in town a short time Wednesday, April 20 enroute to Bloomfield to visit her parents and other rela tives. Weekend guests of the Steve Shavlik family were their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Gesch and family of Lincoln and his mother, Mrs. Gesch, also of Lincoln. Mr. and Mrs. James Grimes were Sunday. April 24 dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Neilson. Mr. and Mrs Kenneth Werner went to Omaha Monday, April 18 to attend a telephone convention. They also visited their son, Dennis I returning home on Wednesday. Sunday dinner guests in the John Honeywell home were: Mr and Vearl Tuttle and Mrs. Roland Tut tle and son of Clearwater, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Urban and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Urban of Ewing, Raymond Urban of Omaha, Mrs. Charlotte Honeywell. Mrs. Erma Tucker, Mr. and Mrs. felvin Rubeck and Kathy and Karen Ermer, all of Chambers. Wednesday, April 20 dinner guests in the J. H. Gibson home were Mr. and Mrs Olaf Jemberg of Central City. Mr. and Mrs. Will Woxberg of Genoa, and Col and Mrs. Otto Saar and daughter. Elsie Ann. who have been stationed with the army in Turkey for the past two years. Mrs Saar is a niece of Mrs. Gib son Mr. and Mrs. Dean Blair and children of Omaha spent a few days the first of the week with his parents. Mr and Mrs Ralph Blair. Mrs. Ed Smith has returned to her home at Chambers from Albion where she was employed for several weeks. Ewing News By Mrs. Harold Harris A community interest meeting wh-ch was held Usursday evening at the Legion club and sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce was attended by seventy people of the town and country. Professor Emiel J. Christensen of the University of Nebraska was the guest speaker. He is coordina tor of community service at the University and is well informed on problems of small towns, in his address of the evening, Prof. Christensen mentioned that it was necessary few the people of the community to develop interest and to find time for the things that need to be done in their town work ing collectively to gain their goal. A question and answ er period followed revealing some ol the needs of Ewing. Farmers need an implement store or a business which would carry parts for re pair of their equipment. At pre sent it is necessary to travel twen ty to fifty miles. The telephone in rural areas was another problem of farmers and ranchers. A public rest room for the vil lage was expressed as a need. Recreational facilities were a to pic of interest. 'The city park lo cated in a convenient place for tourist and travelers as well as for local people could be a project for a club or an organization. George Keller and Dean Pofhal of the Junior league baseball teams were present and gave a report on reorganization for the year, the first game of the season at Page with Ewing, May 9th. Several new suits are needed. Aiex Thramer, president of the Chamber of Commerce was master of ceremonies. Lunch was provided by the business men of the village. Another meeting may be sche duled to work out a plan for the good of Ewing and community. Rev and Mrs. Woodrow Elliott and Sandra were Friday evening guests at the home of Rev. and Mrs. Merlin Loftis near Plainview. Mr. and Mrs. Martin Van Con et were basts at a family gather ing at their home on Sunday, the honored guest her father, George Burk of O'Neill, who was celebrat ing a birthday anniversary. Other guests were Mr. and Mrs. Pat Burk and family, Mr. and Mrs. Dave Burk and family, and Mr. and Mrs. Charles McDonald. The family of Mr. and Mrs. James Mlnarik will hold open house for their 25th wedding an niversary on Sunday, May 1st at their home in Ewing, from 2:00 to 5:00 p m. Everyone is welcome. Mrs. Edna Lofquest spent the weekend at Fremont visiting at the home of her son and daughter in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lof quest. She accompanied her daugh ter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Rueben Meyer and Beverly who were enroute to Omaha. The Mey er family returned to Fremont on Sunday to spend the day. During the weekend Mrs. Lofquest also called at the borne of Mrs. Mike Fhilben at West Point. Mrs. Dale Mettles of Venus was a recent visitor at the home of iMrs. Edna Lofquest. Tlhe ladies are cousins. Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Shrader transacted business in Norfolk on Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Bartos and his sister, Miss Lorraine Bartos of Kimball came Friday to visit at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Wright and family and James Bartos. They returned home an Monday. Guests at the Earl Wright home on Sunday were her father, Elmer Buttedfield of Inman, Mr. and Mrs. Stanley' Bartos ctf Kimball, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Hoxsie and fam ily of Orchard. Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Doud spent Sunday at the home of Mrs. Lillie Meyers at Clearwater. Guests on Monday evening at the home of Mr. and iMrs. Alfred Doud were Mr. and Mrs. Tony Rothleut ner and daughter, Lillian. Mr. and Mrs. John A. Wood will make a business trip to Lincoln on Friday. Mrs. Minnie Larson returned to her home on Sunday after spend ing a week at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Cressel Anderson and family at Bloomfield. Mrs. Mildred Wright and family spent Sunday visiting at the home of her mother, Mrs. Will Lehmen near Chambers. Mr. and Mrs. Dcnald Day and family of O'Neil were guests at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Woeppel and family. Mr. Ernest Norwood accompan ied by Mr>. Norwood took his teen age Sunday School class to Sioux City on Saturday to spend the day on "a sightseeing trip. They visited many places of interest. Class members were Lyle and Jerry Cook, Robert and Noma Snyder and Arlene Pellitier. Overnight guests Saturday at the home of Mr. and Mrs Roland Horde were their grandchildren, Glenda, Leroy and Dennis Napier Arthur Kropp transacted business in Norfolk on Wednesday. He was accompanied by Mrs. Kropp, Max and Tim who went to JAanton to spend the day with relatives. The kindergarten students of the Ewing public school, sixteen in number and Laurie Jo Eacker were guests at a party Friday af ternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Rotherham, the occa sion to celebrate the sixth birth day of their daughter, Beth. Mrs. Willie Shrader assisted Mrs. Rotherham in the entertain ment of the youngster. The birth day cake, made and decorated by Mrs. Rotherham was candle light ed and the center of the attraction of the refreshments. Mrs. Grim, teacher of the kinder garten grade, was a late afternoon guest. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Rotherham and Beth transacted business on Saturday at Norfolk and Carroll. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Rother ham took their daughter, Ann to Alliance on Monday, April 18 after spending her Easter vacation at home. The Rotherhams then went to Scottsbluff where they visited his mother, Mrs. Mary Rotherham who is hospitalized there. She is able to spend a part of her time in a wheel chair. Mrs. Florence Butler was the honored guest at the home of Miss Vina Wood for a one o'clock din ner on Sunday. The occasion to celebrate her birthday anniversary. Wood, as delegate from the First Methodist church in Ewing attended the district con ference meeting at Randolph, on Wednesday. A dedicatory service was held Sunday during the morning wor ship hour at the First Methodist church conducted by Rev. W. W. Elliott, pastor. Dedicated were the robes worn by the cherub choir purchased with a memorial gift to the church in the memory of the late Gene Fie lds. John A. Wood, chairman of the church board made the presen tation with Rev Elliott accepting the gift. The cherub choir which present ed the special number for the wor ship hour was organized by Mrs. W. W. Elliott several months ago. Their practices after school pre pare them for a special number once a month. Miss Judy Tinsley is pianist. In the choir are: Leigh Ann and Bob Pruden, Viola and Anita Parks, Geraldine and Rita Snyder, Richard Shain, Mar ilyn andBruce Sedivy, Randy Rock ey and Galen Tuttle. Miss Kay Jefferies of O’Neill was a weekend guest at the home of her aunt and 'ancle, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Kropp. Miss Sharon Kropp, a student of Wayne State Teachers College also spent the week with her parents. Mr. and Mrs. Loren Jefferies, Mr. and Mrs. Roland Horde and Mrs. Eva Kaczor were Sunday eve ning guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Will Conner. iMr. and Mrs. Gary Tessmer transacted business in Wayne on Saturday. Cheryl, Jo and 9usan Koenig, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Koenig were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Thiele and family of Clearwater on Thursday. The District Youth Rally for members of the Methodist Youth Fellowship was held Sunday after noon at three o’clock at the O’Neill Methodist church. Members at tending from Ewing were Karen Tuttle, Evelyn Snyder, Janell Tams, Bertha Harris, Sandra El liott, Marie Davis, Florene Black, Robert Woeppel, Larry Tuttle and Leonora Tuttle. They were accom panied by their sponsors Rev. and Mrs. W. W. Elliott and Mrs. Mar cus Pierson, who also famished transportation. Eighteen members and one guest, Mrs. Jerome Tuttle were i present at the Missionary Society >f the United Presbyterian ch.irvh when they met Thursday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Wendell Swit zer. Mrs Wilbur Bennett, president presided at the business session. On April 27, the society has been minted to be guests at a meeting at the Bethany church southwest of Ewing, be ginning with a dinner. A sum ef money was voted to be given to missions. The lesson pertaining to parent hood and the training of children was presented by Mrs. Ora Swit zer, Mrs. Keith Biddlecome, Mrs. Leo Miller, Mrs. Thomas Hutton, and Mrs Richard Napier. The group is also studying the Psalms Refreshments were served by the hostess. The Past Matrons and the Star Kensington met Friday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Harriet Welke. Seventeen members were present including Mrs. William Spence of O’Neill, Mrs. Mary Hale and Mrs Maud Bnon of Neligh. Mrs. John A. Wood presided at the business session in the ab sence of Mrs, S. M. Harvey Steinhauser took his mo ther, Mrs. John Steinhauser to Har tingtom Sunday where she will vis it her daughter and family. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer McClurg were in Spencer Monday on busi ness. Mr. and Mrs. Edward Jensen jr. and Mr. and Mrs. Dale Ban ner went to Norfolk Saturday to attend the horse sale. Monday afternoon pitch club met with Mrs. Harry Pelcer Monday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Watson McDonald and Virginia visited Mr. and Mrs. Merle Angus and daughter in Lincoln on Sunday. Mr and Mrs Marvin Fuller and Marilyn, Mr. and Mrs Sherman Gurnsey and Mr. and Mrs. Ho ward Manson were Sunday dinner guests at the Sidney Anderson home in O’Neill.
