Atkinson News Careless Motorist Causes Accident Mr and Mrs. Roy Carr and Mr. I and Mrs. Roger Can- and family returned August 18 from a few days visit at Casper with the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Carr. Enroute home a passing motor ist, when approaching the Carr I auto, threw a pop bottle out of the window and it struck the window glass in the Carr vehicle and shattered the glass so badly that fine pieces showered the occu pants of the car. Three members of the group were taken to Valen tine where it took the doctor some time to remove shattered glass from them. The Roger Carr baby required the most treatment. The Carr families had planned to picnic at the Valentine park enroute home but the excitement of the mishap caused them to cur tail their picnic plans. <;o\ EKNOR BROOKS TO VISIT HERE The 19th annual celebration of Hay Days will be held August 27 28 in conjunction with the second Nebraska invitational Appaloosa Horse show and parade. There will be a picnic lunch from 12 to 1 p.m. on Thursday and Friday at the city park. Picnic tables and water are available in the park. Thursday evening at 5-7 p.m. j there will be a free beef barbe- j cue at the city park. Coffee will ' lx? free too. The beef is being do nated by the Charley W. Peterson family. Thursday morning at 10 will be the Disneyland kids parade. There will be $2,860 given in prizes at the show. Halter classes will be judged beginning at 9 on Thursday morning at the Atkinson Livestock market. Friday evening at 8 the corona tion pageant will begin and a show time revue, under the ball park lights will also be given. At that time the 1959 Hay Queen will be crowned by Gov. Ralph Brooks. The Atkinson Civic Improvement Garden club met at the city park on Wednesday for their regular meeting. Mrs. Leonard Jungman and Miss Barbara Mlinar were hostesses and served a picnic lunch consisting of fried chicken, potato salad, peach shortcake and iced tea and coffee. Twelve mem bers answered roll call with “Show Criticisms." Mrs. Herman Gans presented the lesson on, “Lillies are better than ever." The next meeting will be on September 8 and a Chinese auction will be held. Circle D of the Methodist church met last Wednesday at the ranch home of Mrs. Jay Dobrovolny with a picnic. Twelve members answered roll call. Devotions were led by Mrs. Lulu Dunn in the absence of Mrs. Walter Puc kett. Mrs. Gertrude West was a guest. The circle members pre sented Mrs. Dobrovolny with a wedding gift. Mrs. Dobrobolny was the former Mrs. Doris Andrus The September hostesses will be Mrs. Mrs. Charles Gates and Mrs. Jim Kubart. Mrs. Howard Davis entertained the Merry Mixers extension club on August 17 at her home with a good attendance. Roll call was answered with "Things I don't like to do in my home.” The lesson study "Watch dogs for Mrs. Consumer” was present ed by Mrs. Lyman White. Mrs. Davis discussed flower arranging for the Hobby hour following the regular meeting. Next meeting will be Septem ber 21 with Mrs. Harvey Wahl. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer McClurg and I family spent August 16 visiting ! Mrs. McClurg's brother and fam ily, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence White ; near Burwell. Denton Colfack went to Lincoln | last Thursday to take his sister, I Miss Shirley Colfack. She has I been visiting at the home of her ; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Emil Col | fack for the past few weeks. She will be an attendent at the wed ; ding of a friend in Lincoln on August 21 and then left Lincoln August 21 and flew to Houston. Tex., where she has employment. Aceompaning them to Lincoln were Mrs. Emil Colfack and Dennis and Ralph Heiser. Mr. and Mrs. Emil Colfack and boys attended the stock car races in the park in Stuart on Sunday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Robertson and family who formerly lived in the Dustin community and now live at Sedro Wooley Wash., visited last Thursday afternoon in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Emil Colfack and were Thursday evening dinner guests. Mr. and Mrs. Rol>ertson left Monday for Minnesota where they will visit relatives and then go to Washington D. C. and on to Missouri where they will visit Mrs. Itohertson's sister and family. They expect to return to Sedro Wooley about the middle of Sep tember. The Robertsons have been gone from the Dustin com munity about sixteen years and this is their first trip back to Ne braska since leaving here. The new band mistress, Mrs. Dale Edwards, has arrived in At kinson and held the first band meeting of the year Saturday eve ning for a rehearsal with band mem hers and alumni who plan to ap pear with the band on Hay Days. Mrs. Edwards is the new instruc tor in band at the Atkinson pub lic school for the fall school term. Mrs. Herman McDaniels left Wednesday with her daughter, Mrs. Hazel Ash and children for San Jose, Calif., where she will spend an extended vacation with the Ash family and another daugh ter. Mrs. Ash and children have been visiting points in Nebraska and Iowa for two weeks returning to Atkinson to take her mother home with her. Miss Lodema Wefso will come from Denver on Thursday morn ing to spend a few days with her parents. Mr. and Mrs. " illiam Wefso and to attend the Hay Days. She expects to return to Denver on Monday. , Mrs. Arthur Olberding of Stu art brought her children to Atkin son Saturday afternoon to enjoy a swim at the local pool while she did her shopping. Mr. and Mrs. Emil Colfack re turned last Tuesday from a trip through the Yellowstone Park and points in Montana and Wyoming Mrs. Orland Anson took her aunt. Mrs. Violet Dickerson, to Columbus Wednesday whore she will take the train for her home in Los Angeles. I Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Haas of j Ainsworth returned to their home : after spending Sunday with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Wahl. Sgt. Haas returned to Atkin son Saturday evening from Minn esota, where he had been on his tour of duty at Camp Ripley the past two weeks and Mrs. Haas ami son spent that time with her par ents in Atkinson. Also returning from Camp Ripley was Ed Seh mueeker. another son-in-law of the Wahls. ,, _ Mr. and Mrs. Lem Mills of bur well were Sunday dinner guests at the homo of Mr. and Mrs. Don Mills. Max Mills, son of Mr. and Mrs. Don Mills returned to At kinson with his grandparents, as he had spent the past two weeks visiting them near Burweli. bun day afternoon the party went to Ft. Randall dam for an outing. The Lem Mills left for their home at Burweli late Sunday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Bil Wefso spent Sunday afternoon at the A. J. Run nels home in Stuart. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Keyes of Big Springs were overnight guests of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Puckett on Thursday. Mr. Keyes is a cou sin of Walter Puckett. Miss Lois Puckett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Puckett will leave Thursday for Chadron where she will teach in the Chadron Pu lic high school this coming year. Miss Puckett will teach home ec onomics and physical education. She graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University in June. Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Roth of Val entine returned Saturday from a weeks vacation in Colorado They will spend this week visit ing with friends and relatives in j and around Atkinson and attend the Hay Days. The Roth children stay ed with their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Roth while their parents were on vacation. Ray Mack of Casper, Wyo., came Sunday to spend a week visiting with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Mack, and other rel atives and friends. Capt and Mrs. Robert Mack and children, Jerry and Timmy, arrived in Atkinson Monday to spend a week visiting relatives and friends, Capt. and Mrs. Norris Johnson of Sacramento, Calif., came last Monday to spend a few days with Mrs. Johnson's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Mack. Mrs. Johnson will he rememliered as Marjorie Mack. Capt. Johnson has been stationed in California and left Friday for Halstad, Minn., to visit his par ents and will report to Otis Air Force base in Massaehuttes. Mrs. Johnson will remain with her par ents indefinitely or until housing can be arranged. Mrs. Opal Keating took her two grandchildren to Hidden Paradise "iday evening to dinner and to spend ‘he ev ning. The children haw been sp nding a part of their summer vacation in Atkinson and expect to return to their home in Denver about Sunday. Clair Ford of Anaconda, Mont., came Saturday evening to spend a few days visiting at the home of his sister and family, Mr. and Mrs. Orland Anson and other rel atives and friends. Mrs. Walter Puckett and daugh ter Lois were Monday afternoon callers of Mrs. Bill Wefso. William Wefso and Mr. George H. Brede cf Ainsworth drove to Lincoln on Monday on business returning Tuesday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer McClurg and Donna attended church ser vices at the Cleveland church Sunday. Marcia McClurg. daugh ter of Mr. and Mi's. Cab in Mc Clurg, was baptized at the morn ing service. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer McClurg, Donna and Mr. and Mrs. Calvin McClurg atended the stock car races at Stuart Sunday evening. Miss Barbara Mlinar returned home last Monday from Omaha where she had attended the wed ding of her cousin Miss Mary Ciaire Huso. Miss Mlinar baked the wedding cake and decorated it for her cousin. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Schrammel of Herndon Kan., were weekend guests of Supt. and Mrs. L. S. Bush in Atkinson. Mr. and Mrs. Em'.c Cerney and family from Arthur were visitors Friday and Saturday in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Claude John son. Mrs. Cerney is a daughter of the Johnsons. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Garvin and family left Sunday after spend ing a few days visiting Mrs. Gar vin's sister. Mrs. Claude Johnson and family Mr. Garvin works at the Roosevelt mine which is near the head of the Grand Can yon in Arizona. Mr. , and Mrs. Claude Johnson went to Grand Island Wednesday to visit Mrs. George Zaruba, who has been hospitalized at the St. Francis hospital there. The John sons returned home Thursdy. The Intermediate M e t hodist Youth Fellowship group hold a swimming party and picnic at the city park on Sunday evening to honor the new members coming into the seventh grade. Rev. and Mrs. Charles Gates were their sponsors. Circle D of the Methodist church will sponsor Miss Alice Young, International Farm Youth Exchange student, who will show her slides of Belgium on Wednes day evening at 8 p.m. A silver tea will follow the showing of the slides. Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Granteer, and her two brothers of Omaha were Saturday night visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Clemens. Mrs. Granteer is the former Shar on Porter, daughter of Richard Porter. We received 1.4 inches of rain Friday evening. There was quite a display of lightning and a few haystacks were struck and burn ed. Mrs. Edith Andersen accompan ied Mrs. Stella Sparks to Grand Island Sunday evening to meet Mrs. Delia Ernst, who was return : ing from California. They dorve on to Central City in the afternoon and visited Mrs. Andersen's son, Roy and family until time to meet the train at midnight. Mr. and Mrs. August Bolt/ and the granddaughter, Jolene Boltz of Grand Island visited their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Ver non Berry on Wednesday and at tended the Chambers fair. Mr. and Mrs. George Fullerton took their daughter, Phillis, to Lincoln on Friday where she will attend a beauty school. Vern Sageser went to Sioux City Sunday and Monday. Rodney Fix. son of Mr. and Mrs Lyle Fix, celebrated his 5th birth day on August 13 with a birth day party at his home.
