Army M-Sgt. Chiton Francis, son of Mrs. Olive I. Francis,
Spencer, was recently promoted to super grade E-9 while serving
with the 3d Armored Division in Friedburg, Germany. Super rating,
pay grades E-8 and E-9, were established by Congress in a recent
[nty bill for top qualified senior non-commissioned officers. Sergeant
| Francis attended Anoka High School. His wife, Clara, Is with him

Spice Cake for Picnics
If your picnic menu calls for a
cake, you will find this recipe for
old fashioned spice cake sent to us
by Joe Sivesind, local salesman
of the Meadow Gold Dairy espec
ially adaptable to carrying in a
basket.
It is a tender, nicely flavored
cake made with buttermilk and
spices which can l>e taken to a
picnic site right in the pan in
which it is baked.
Even the topping is a good “car
rier’, says Beatrice Cooke, direc
tor of the company’s Chicago test
kitchens where the recipe was cre
ated. for it is baked on the batter,
making a buttery, crumbly coat
ing.
Old Fashioned Picnic Spice Cake
(12 by 9 by 2 inch pun)
3 cups sifted cake flour
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup brown sugar, firmly
packed
1 cup butter
2 eggs
2/3 cup sifted cake flour
1 teaspoon soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
Vi teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
V2 teaspoon cloves
Vi teaspoon nutmeg
V2 teaspoon allspice
1 cup buttermilk
Combine three cups flour and
sugars; cut in butter until mixture
[ resembles fine crumbs. Reserve
one cup for topping. To remainder,
add eggs; beat until light and
fluffy. Sift remaining dry ingrod
I ients together? add to creamed I
mixture alternately with butter
; milk, mixing well after each ad
dition. Pour batter into greased
pan and sprinkle crumb mixture
! on top. Bake at 350 degrees for
45 minutes. When cool cut into 24 j
squares.
