• • * , • • Chambers News ' • I 4th Annual Conference Held In Chambers By Mrs. E. K. Carpenter The fourth annual missions con ference was held a« the Memorial baptist Church April 23 through Sunday. Guest speakers were Deh bert Carper from the Belgian Con go and Pringle McElheron of the West indies. Curios, slides, films and literature were shown, Sun day a dinner was served at the church. Tliey had morning, after noon ami evening services. Mr, and Mrs. Andrew Gilbert returned Friday from a 10 day vi sit with their son-in-law and daugh ter, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. McAllister. Mr. and Mrs. Dale Gilbert ami family of Atkinson were Sunday dinner guests of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Gilbert. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Werner and daughter, Connie spent the past weekend in Omaha as guests of his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Gifford Caldwell and also visiting their son, Dennis Ed Dewey is patient in St. Anthony's hosptai in O’Neill. Mrs. Marjorie Sammons of Sioux City, la., came April 23 to visit her parents. Mr. and Mrs. T. E. Alderson, and remained for a few days to see her brother, Jack Alderson of Tucson, Ari/.., who arrived Sunday. Kenneth Thomson, student at Kearney State College ami Rodney Elkins. Gene Adams and Douglas Dankert, students at Wayne, spent the weekend with home folks. Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Whitaker and Mr. and Mrs Erwin Carpen ter were Sunday dinner guests in the Neven Ickes home at Page. Other guests were Mr. and Mrs. I^ee Miner of Ravenna. Gen Van Gerpen of Fremont was a weekend guest in the Edgar DeHart home. Carolyn Wintermote, student nurse at Emmanuel Lutheran hos pital in Omaha spent the weekend with her parents, Mr. and Mi's. Guais Wintermote. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Sprandle of Plymouth came Saturday to vi sit his grandfather. John Walter, sr., his aunt, Mrs. Rena Deirking. and the C. V. Robertson, Elwyn Robertson and A A. Walter fam ilies. They returned home Monday. Mr. and Mrs. LaMoyne John son ami baby daughter of Arnold came Friday evening and visited until Sunday with the Clarence Damme family and with other old friends and neighbors. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Hoerle spent Saturday night with the Ru lien Peltzers. Mrs. C. E. Tibbets and Mrs. Genevieve Bell, who have sj>ent the winter in Tucson, Ariz. arrived home Sunday. Jack Alderson, of Tucson came with them to do the i driving, due to a slight heart at tack which Mrs. Tibtiets suffered several weeks ago. He will visit his parents. Mr. anil Mrs. T. E. Alderson. This is his first visit in the 4*2 years since the family moved from the Chambers com munity. Mrs. John Honeywell and Mrs. Anna Albers left April 23 for Oma ha for a weeks visit, the former with her sister, Mrs. Joseph Sin kulc, and the latter with a friend, Mrs. Anne Sullivan. Cecil Thornton was a patient in St. Anthony's hospital in O'Neill last week. He came home Sunday. Arthur Fluckey was taken to St. Anthony’s hospital April 23 for medical care. Guests Sunday in the Elwyn Ro bertson home were Mr. and Mrs. C. V. Robertson, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Spann and Mrs. Paul Roth of Chambers, Mr. and Mrs. Del liert Robertson and children of O'Neill, and Mr. and Mrs Clar ence Sprandle of Plymouth. The occasion was in honor of the birth day anniversary of Mrs. C. V. Ro bertson. Mrs. Vernon Whitaker went to Onl Saturday to spend a fevv days with her mother, Mrs. Hattie Ri chardson, and her brothers, Clint and Raymond. „ . The Prairie Wranglers 4-H Club met at the Vernon Whitaker home April 17. Troy Westover of Bur well was present to show pictures he had taken in Germany, Switzer land, Eugland and Ireland, while be was stationed over seas. Clifford Campbell went to St. Joseph hospital April 18 for care of a neck injury. He is expected home in a few days. Mrs. Brace Grimes returned home Monday from St. Anthony’s hospital in O'Neill where she had been a patient for a week. Mrs. Myrtle Thorin and daugh ter, Beverly of Neligh were Sun day guests of Mr. and Mrs. IJoyd Wintermote and family. Cox, who has been em- t ployed at the Vernon Lowery ranch i southwest of Chambers for the < past sevral months started work- i ing April 20 for the co-op in Cham bers. ! Mrs. Kathleen Render and her brothers, Charles Cox, jr. and Bil- i ly, attended the alumni reunion < and banquet at Ericson Saturday evening. They were all gra duates of the Ericson high school. The Rev. Charles Cox and Louis , Neilson were making hospital calls April 23 in Atkinson and O'Neill Rev. Charles Cox received word April 17 of the death of his only sister, Mrs. W. H. McKern of Sioux Falls. S.D. Rev. Cox and ! sons. Charles, jr. and Billy drove to Sioux Falls April 22 to attend the funeral. Family night was held Sunday evening at the Methodist church with the program consisting of slides shown by Mr and Mrs. Le Roy Holcomb of their vacation trips in the Colorado Rockies. Lunch was served following the program and a social hour spent. The American legion auxiliary of unit 320 will observe Poppy Day 1 Saturday, May 9th throughout the day and evening. Remember to honor the dead and cheer the li ving heros of the three wars on this day be wearing a poppy, which is their flower. They helped you-now you help them- wear a Poppy help a Vet. The woman’s Society of Christian Service met Thursday p.m. April 23ixi at the Methodist Church. The president Mrs. T. E. New house conducted the business ses sion. The treasurer, Mrs. A. B. Hubbard read a letter from the dis trict treasurer telling of the work of the society around the world and asked for a pledge of $353 for the coming year. It was voted to ac cept the pledge. The Society also voted to pay $15.00 on the salaries of three Neb aska Methodist missionaries and 0 buy some Bibles for the Sunday chool as a result of the recent tudy on Isaiah. Mrs. I^avern Ilocrle told the [roup of a nursery shower which he young adults are sponsoring, lifts are to lie soft noiseless toys. Dorsey News By Mrs. Harold Osborn Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Hiscocks were visitors at the Lyle Wells home Friday night. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Barta and Evelyn were visitors at the Bud Mitchell home Friday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Leman Huber were visitors at the Harold Osborn home April 23. Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Ruzicka visited April 23 at the Tom Alder home. Mr. and Mrs. John Sedivy of Oregon are visiting relatives and friends in this territory. They plan on being here about three weeks. They had dinner April 23 with Mr. and Mrs. Howard Slack. Miss Marlyn Graham spent the weekend with her parents and grandparents. Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Richter and family and Mrs. and Mrs. John Babl and family were Sun day supper guests at the Lee Bra dy sr. home. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Barta and Evelyn visited at the Wilbur Mit chell home Sunday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Greene visited at the Harold Osborn home Sunday and joined them in a wien er roast that evening. Ruth return ed to Lynch with them. Mrs. Carrie Hunter and Miss Lizzie Carson and Mrs. Mary Wolfe were Sunday dinner guests at the Edward Carson home. Miss Jo Anne Aim spent Satur day with her gradmother in O' Neill, returning home Sunday. Gene Schaaf and Chipper Cole received 100 |>er cent In arithmetic every day this week. The Kindergarten class have fi nished “We Work and Play" in reading. The first grade had “ a just for [fun" test in arithmetic. Sherry Fox was the winner. Joan and Duane Grothe celebra ted their birthdays on April 21. I They treated our room to fudge i bars. We wish to thank Duane and i Joan. Mrs. Herman Grothe and Mrs. Robert Freed visited our room on Wednesday. Joan Grothe and Sherry Fox were absent one day this week We have been studying insects and small animals in the third grade science. Kent Cole made a report on spiders.
