O’Neill Loses Bid
for Class B Meet
At a meeting held in Ord. school
superintendents and coaches, as
signed to the class B inter-district
basketball playoff, St. Paul was
selected as the site tor the district
tournament.
Schools involved in the tourna
ment will be Ainsworth, Bassett,
O'Neill, O’Neill St. Mary’s, Ord,
Burwell, Ra\onna and St. Paul.
The group voted that it would
take me votes to determine the
site. Bassett was not present for
the meeting but had called the
superintendent from Ord and in
dicated O'Neill as its choice. The
group voted that Bassett s vote
would count on the first ballot but
not count on subsequent ballots.
After the first ballot was cast,
the following results were tabu
lated: O'Neill, 4; St. Paul, 3; Ord,
1. The next ballot cut O'Neill
short one vote because the Bus
sett vote no longer counted. This
tied O'Neill and St. Paul with
three votes each with Ord ab
j staining.
The discussion then centered
! around selecting a site other titan
j O'Neill or St. Paul because the
I group could not agree. Ainsworth
and St. Mary’s felt that the choice
would go to Ord and cast their
vote in favor of St. Paul. This
gave St. Paul the five votes nec
essary tor securing the 1959 tourn
ament.
The coaches were interested in
taking the favored Ord team off
of the home court. The main ob
jection of the south group that
was raised against O'Neill as the
site was inadequate seating to ac
commodate the class B tourna
ment.
A class D tournament will be
held here, however, during the
same week in the O'Neill public
school gym. The schools involved
met at Page and Supt. Hock, who
was selected by the NSAA as
chairman of the meeting, request
ed that O’Neill take a class D
tournament if they failed to win a
class B meet.
