10-Year Award to
Chief Draft Clerk
Mrs. W. H. Harty, a gold star
mother. Wednesday was present
ed a certificate "in recognition of
10 years of loyal and faithful ser
vice in the administration of the
selective service system".
Presentation was made by Col.
Francis S. Drath of Lincoln, dep
uty director of Nebraska’s selec
tive service. The ceremony took
place in the draft office in the
Downey building.
Witnessing the presentation were
members of the Holt draft board:

of O’Neill, member.
Total registrations here total
2,198. One hundred thirty-two have
volunteered for induction, and 410
were inducted. In addition, many
of the registrants under Mrs.
Harty's administration have en
listed in various branches of mil
itary service during her tenure.
Roth Rites Held
Friday at Chambers
CHAMBERS Funeral services
for Paul Albert Roth, 65, were
held at 2 p.m., Friday, October
31, at St. Paul's Lutheran church
Rev. William Roten officiated. Mr.
Roth died early Tuesday, October
28, in St. Anthony's hospital. He
had been ill five days.
A quartette composed of Stanley
Lambert, Mrs. Kenneth Adams,
Mrs. Bernard Hoffman and Eu
gene Baker sang. Mrs. Vernon
Harley was organist.
Pallbearers were Leslie Liesi
vald, Berl Waldo, Kenneth Wern
er, Ernest Farrier, Fred Catron
and Clarence Wyant. Honorary

Firemen Called
as Wind Rages
A grass fire at noon Saturday
burned off more than half of a
square block in a vacant area at
the east edge of O'Neill. Elmer
Hinshaw was tanning off weeds.
The fire got away from him and
firemen were needed
The firemen were called at
11:15 p.m. Tuesday to the Jack
Taylor residence north of the cor
ner of Ninth and Adams st. Tin1
chimney was burning out but
theiv was no damage. The siren
produced an eerie sound as high
winds raged.
There was some isolated light
ning in Kront in land Tuesday night
but no damage was reported.
