Bolt of Lightning
Kills 16 Yearlings
Robert <“Bob”t Strong, who
lives 12 miles south of O’Neill
and three miles west, last week
reported 16 head of yearling
cattle in his pasture were kil
led by a Ixilt of lightning.
There were 24 head in the
pasture clustered near two
small oak trees. Strong esti
mated about two days hail elap
sed before the dead critters
were discovered.
Ten of the dead yearlings be
longed to Raymond Malcom of
Laurel, who was pasturing 10
at the Strong place for the sum
mer. Six belonged to Strong.
By coincidence, all 16 were
facing the same direction east
when the bolt struck.
Strong said he had to make
disposition of the animals be
cause the rendering people were
disinterested because the crit
ters had been dead "too long”.
The pasture is located on the
Weldon Wood place northeast of
Chambers and is now owned by
Herman Cook. Several neigh
bors in the vicinity lost one or
two each during the same storm.
