Carpenter, \V ife Surprised on 40th Wedding Date CHAMBERS Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Carpenter were honored guests at the home of their son in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Dean Stevens and family at Atkinson, on their 40th wedding Anniversary Saturday, April 5. The Carpenters’ three daugh ters, Mrs. Donald Grimes, Mrs. Dean Stevens and Mrs. Ben Med calf and their families planned the affair as a complete sur prise to their parents. They were assisted in their “conspiracy” by several friends and relatives. On Thursday and Friday when cards of congratulations came, the Carpenters thought they were being honored by a card shower which they considered "very nice”. They were entirely mis lead when they received a casual invitation to have dinner with the Stevens and Medcalf famil ies at the Stevens home Saturday. When they arrived and found not only the Stevens and Med calf families, but also the Don ald Grimes family of Eaton, Colo., they were "truly sur prised”. A dinner had been prepared and the table was decorated for the occasion i n red-and-white with candles and miniature bride and bridegroom. Mrs. Carpenter was presented a pink carnation corsage and Mr. Carpenter a white carnation boutonneire. Following dinner gifts were presented, pictures were taken li iu icauui^a aiiu music uj im daughters and grandchildren, were given. A three tier wedding cake, >aked and decorated by Bonnie Grimes graced the table along with candles and flowers. The latter was a gift from the Atkin son florists. The cake was ser ved with salad, sandwiches and coffee for lunch. Mrs. Genevieve Bell of Cham bers was also a dinner guest. Evening callers included Mr. and Mrs. Harry Snyder of In man and Mrs. Allen Miller, Ilar len and Lila of Atkinson. Road and weather conditions and illness prevented some from attending. Bad Weather horces Cancel of Service CHAMBERS The Womans Society of Christian Service met Thursday, April 3, at the Metho dist church with Mrs. John Win tcrmote hostess, assisted by Mrs. James Grimes. Nineteen mem bers and one visitor were pre sent. Mrs. Bruce Grimes was in charge of the devotionals. Mrs. r. E. Alderson presented the les son on the march of youth in missions. Mrs. Steve Shavlik, Mrs. Genevieve Bell and Mrs. Clarence Damme participated in the discussion. Mrs. Darrell Gillette opened the business session with a poem. "Legend of the Dogwood ” She announced the spring meeting to be held in Neligh April 30. A card of thanks from the Bethany Presbyterian ladies was read for the Methodist participation in the world day of prayer. The program committee re ported on plans for a tea May 1. The nominating committee also gave a report and missionary minutes were given by the miss ionary secretary. It was announced that a Gar de^ club meeting would be held at the church May 6. Rockets Join an Established Loop Tho O'Neill Rockets Monday night won a berth in revised northeast Nebraska league. The loop will operate with a west-half and east-half. Members of the west-half are Orchard, Oakdale, Tilden, Peters burg and O’Neill. East-half teams are Norfolk, Stanton, Rattle Creek and Madi son. Manager Lowell Nesbitt of the O'Neill club, who attended the Monday session at Battle Creek, said it is possible one of the west half teams will Ik? transferred to the eastern division, and it is like ly Chambers. April 1. returned Wed nesday from a Sioux City hos pital. His right arm, fractured in two places above the elbow, is mend ding. Some of the bone was taken out and the arm was completely opened. His body is black-and hlue and he suffers a knee injury. Berger was travelling alone near his Opportunity home when the 10:45 p.m., accident occurred.
