    Atkinson, Inman Land Two Each
The Atkinson high Balers. Holt county cage champions of 1958,«
and the strong Inman high Tigers landed two berths each on The
Frontier's mythical all-Holt county basketball team.
Balloting was conducted among coaches and the Holt tourney
officials. Unanimous choices were:
Ned Kelley of Inman, Duane Humphrey of Atkinson, Don Sladek
of Atkinson, Larry Tomlinson of St. Mary's academy and Dana Bige
low of Stuart.
Lacking one or two ballots •
of being unanimous were Ray
Shaffer of St. Joseph's hall, Rod
Elkins of Chambers, and Sonny
Carl of Ewing.
Other two honorees on the 10
member dream tram are Holland
Hansen of Inman and the only
sophomore on the team Larry
Oetter.
NED KELLEY: He was a
shoo-in, hands down Nobody
overlooked this chap who rolled
up 421 points for the Inman Ti
gers averaging 21 points per
game. He established a school
scoring record against Elgin,
racking up 51 points. Kelley was
the heart of Inman's fine team,
which posted a 23-4 season’s rec
ord. Kelley is a senior.
LARRY TOMLINSON: Here
was the power of the St. Mary’s
team a cool, able athlete who
ranked in the top three on every
ballot. A junior, Tomlinson clip
ped along at 20.6 points per game,
hitting 54 percent of his shots,
lie was a great relxHinder (both
ends I and sparked SMA's fast
breaking offense. One ballot said:
"Tomlinson does everything well."
He captained the 1958 Cardinals.
RODNEY ELKINS: A four
year letterman at Chambers, he
led the Coyotes in scoring both
his junior and senior years. His
production during the just-end
ed season w*as 358 points- an
average of 21.5 per game. The
Coyotes enjoyed a good season
1 ut buckled under tournament
stress.
RAYMOND SHAFFER: Here
was an all-around ball player
who sparkled throughout the sea
son for the St. Joseph's hall Blue
jays. The Jays improved vastly
as the season wore on. largely
around Shaffer.
DEIJiERT CSONNY") CARL:
A four-year cage veteran at
Ewing, he played 15 games and
averaged 20 points. His bulk was
Ewings strong point at both
ends of the court.
ROLLAND HANSEN: This be
spectacled chap is a good ball
handler, smart and effective re>
tounder and played an excellent
floorgame all season for the In
man Tigers. He is regarded by
his own coach as a gotxi college
prospect. Hansen barely edged
out two teammates for the slot—
Sam Watson, whose support was
very strong, and Dick Appleby
DON SIADEK: Here is the long
boy (6-2i on the mythical dream
team. He sank over half of his
shots for the surprising Atkinson
high Balers, and was a key in
the Balers’ potent offensive.
"Sladek is a smart, natural-bom
ball player," declared one of the
ballots, and he uses his height
effectively.
DUANE HUMPHREY: Easily
one of the best ball players in the
season in 24 games -a W-point
area, he tallied 405 points this
average. He was the Balers’
“quarterback" on the floor; earn
ed cage letters three seasons.
> DANA BIGELOW: He hit over'
two hundred points for the Stuart
Broncos, who at times turned in
dandy basketball Bigelow was
a good rebounder, crafty guard
and consistently made a good ac
counting for himself everywhere
on the court. _
LARRY OETTER: Here’s the
smallest guy and youngest of the
all-stars and also played with a
team (O'Neill high) that won the
fewest games (one). His joining
the ranks of the dream crew was
by a cat's whisker. Oetter is a
lightweight (138) and is only 15
years-old. A sophomore, point
getting is his forte. Voters al
so considered O'Neill high play
ed the tough*“St schedule and
Oetter could have shown mightly
against lesser competition. He
buzzed at 15 points per game on
a small and green team that was
dwarfed by most opponents.
The Holt county tourney offi
cials Glen Blakeman of Wayne
State college and Brad Wame
munde of Winside- insisted on
their joint ballot that if Inman's
Sam Watson failed to land a berth
on the first 10 he should be giv
en sportsmanship recognition.
Watson played an excellent floor
game all season and regularly
ivon plaudits of officials and re
spect of the fans. His floor game
was excellent.
The berth on the team won by
a teammate, Holland Hansen,
was virtually a tossup between
Hansen, Watson and another
matie, Dick Appleby. The latter
is a junior.
Another very strong contender
was Atkinson's Jim Hendricks
(5-10. senior). He was Atkinson's
best shot at the' gratis line and
was team captain. He tallied
238 points for the Balers in 21
games won and three lost.
It is significant that Bigelow,
Tomlinson, Humphrey and Carl
were members of The Frontier’s
all-Holt football team for 1957 an
nounced in November.
