Bob Witherwax Is
Holt Soil Entry
Mr. and Mrs. Rob Witherwax of!
Spencer were special guests at
the state convention of the Ne
braska Association of Soil Con-}
versation districts. The conven
tion was held Monday and Tues-!
day at North Platte.
Mr. Witherwax, who farms
three miles east of the Spencer}
dam on Holt’s northern boundary,}
had been selected as the Holt
] soil districts representative in
state competition.
Also attending the convention
were Mr. and Mrs. M. G. French,
sr., of Page, Mr. and Mrs. Har
vey Krugman and Mr. and Mrs.
Elmer Juraeek. all of O’Neill.
Each district in the state sel
lects a cooperator "who has done'
a good job of conservation". Aer
ial photos of the farms arc taken
and studied by judges, and a lar
ge colored photo is made.
Tri-county bank of Stuart co
sponsored Holt’s entry at North
Platte.
According to C. R. ("Bob”)
Hill of the Holt district, Mr. Wit
herwax has made a vast change
on his place in the past few vears.
He has two farm ponds. He has
established waterways and ter
races on a field that he described
as being nothing but ditches and
cockle burrs when he took over
the farm. Now it is a productive
field of alfalfa.
He also has leveled a small
field for surface irrigation which
has done very well this year.
“Bob uses a rotation of corn
and alfalfa and says he likes to
turn under a good growth of al
falfa in late spring for soil im
provement,” Mr. Hill pointed
out.
"He has done a good job of
conservation but still is planning
more improvements."
