\X eed Question
Requires Answer
This week’s soil conservation
question comes from Helen Mar
tens of Emmet, asking: "If we go
into a period of greater moisture
for pasture, will the weeds that
have started in so many places
be killed out by grass or will the
grass have to be re-seeded""
Answer:
It is natural that with the pos
sible over use of pastures, even
those properly stocked normally,
during an abnormally dry season
that wt>ods will appear to an alar
ming rate when periods of great
er moisture return. This is large
ly because the grass has been
odamaged by the dry season and
ever use and with added moisture
something w ill grow in the voids.
This usually w ill be weeds for the
first year but the grass will come
back and take over without re
seeding. unless the range is dam
aged in other ways.
However, it is not to be con
tsrewed that it is never beneficial
to control weeds in grassland.
Annual weeds or weedy grasses
may be mowed in the early hud
stage and will be reduced so that
the native grasses will have a
better opportunity to respond to
the added moisture. In case of
very heavy infestation of peren
nial weeds it may be advisable
to spray with chemicals for weed
control. However, generally
speaking, native vegetation, pro
perly managed will crowd out the
weeds until they are not a prob
lem.
