MERRILL ANDERSON MONOWI — Despite adverse' weather and road conditions, the 50th anniversary celebration at the Methodist church in Monowi was observed Sunday, June 16, and was well attended, A few pioneer souls in the early nineties recognized the need of a place of worship. With com bined effort they succeeded in founding a church in this eastern | Boyd county community. The Methodist church was or-, ganized in 1903 with five mem bers. Services were he Ul in the j waiting room of the depot. On’ various occasions evangelistic meetings were held at the old sod school house near the Alford j cemetery. Many recall the untiring efforts) of William Alford, sr., a devout j Christian. Mr. Alford served as! superintendent and Sunday-schoolI teacher for many years. As re called by many members of his ’ family, he never missed a Sun-1 day service. His home oftimes was a camp stool for the mission ary or minister. The first minister appointed was Rev. Walker C. Kelly. He ar rived March 2, 1903. Disillusioned at prospects confronting him, he was ready to retrace his move.1 However, after much persuasion, he decided to "try it” for a while. Again, Mr. Alford's hospitality proved valuable. Time progressed as did the en thusiam of this group. The village donated a small tract, of land, al so contributed $100 for the church building, which was completed In 1907, and dedicated by the pre siding elder, Thomus Bithell, on June 16, 1907. In the year of 1905 a livery barn was built to shelter the minister’s driving horses. The small community encount ered many disappointments and the church suffered the loss of many of its members who moved away when drouth descended down upon this area in 1908. But the church doors never closed. Many former members were unable to attend the anniversary services because of distance or health conditions, but some for warded messages by letter and excerpts were read. Familar names of past minis ters of the church are J. H. Al len, B. H. Berten, H, A. Hornady, M. E. Richmond and G. B. May field. ine aiternoon session conuuct ed by Rev. Anna Nelson, pastor of Lynch and Monowi churches, consisted of reminiscing events of yesteryear, exibition of a friend ship quilt by Mrs. Clement Christensen (containing 270 names made up by members of the Lad ies Aid society and pieced to gether by Mrs. Christensen’s mother, Mrs. S. E. Looker), pre sentation of a song written by evangelist Albert W. Ahrendts and dedicated to his daughter. Rev. Ahrendts assisted with re vival meetings in Monowi some years ago. He and Mrs. Ahrendts are now residing in York. The pianist for the day was Mrs. Lawson Lightfoot of Spencer whose father, the late Rev. John Hewitson, died in 1937 while pas tor of the Lynch and Monowi churches. Those attending from a dis tance included Morris Gardener of San Francisco, Calif., and Pete Jewel of Crofton. Following the close of the com memoration services, luncheon was served by the ladies of the church. METHODIST (Page Inman) Rev. Lisle E.
