STUART—The potent Stuast
high Broncos muffed 13 free
throws during the first half in
Friday night’s game against the
St. Mary's academy Cardinals
of O’Neill, but the Stuart crew
won it anyway, 42-39.
It was the first loss in three
starts for Coach Don Temple
meyer’s crew, which earlier had
turned back ONeill high and
Atkinson high.
By virtue of the win the
Broncs served notice they will
be tough to reckon with in Holt
cage circles this season. They
were the county grid champions.
The match was close all the
way. St. Mary’s owned a 10-6
first period lead.
St. Mary’s led 16-10 in the
second period with Jim Froelich
and Jim Becker each hitting a
pair of fielders. But Dana Bige
low potted three straight from
the corner to help put Stuart
ahead at the half.
Stuart went ahead, 22-20 at
at the half.
At the end of the third it was
Stuart 32, St. Mary’s 31.
Trailing by five points with
less than three minutes to go, the
Cards pulled to within one point.
They gambled on a long shot with
10 seconds to go, missed, Stuart re
covered and Minnig was fouled.
He calmly dropped in two gratis
flips and that ended it.
The Templemeyer crew drop
ped only 30 percent of the tree
throws—three out of 10—while
the Broncos hit 39 percent — 10
out of 26.
Jim F’roelich, who was laid up
in football, hit a torrid pace
with 19 points. He missed only
three fieldgoal tries out of 12
attempts—all outside the circle.
Don Minning came through
with 18 points for the victors
while Dana Bigelow scored 10.
St. Mary’s reserves won over
the junior Broncs, 30-27, with
Gary Holly getting 12 points.
