135 Youths Get
Civics Lesson
Study Government
at Courthouse
County government day was
observed here Monday when
juniors from the various high
school, having been “elected" to
the various county “offices”,
gathered for an all-day lesson in
practical civics.
The program was sponsored
the American Legion. George
Wettlaufer of Page, county com
mander, presided at the general
assembly opening; Julius D. Cro
nin, O’Neill attorney, made a
statement on the purpose of
county government; County
Judge Louis W. Reimer admin
istered the oaths of office.
Lunch was served by the Le
gion auxiliary; Mrs. Milo Lan
dreth of Page, county president.
After the assignments to the
various offices, where the stu
dent officers worked alongside
the regularly constituted officers,
a mock trial was staged in the
courtroom with District Judge
D. R. Mounts presiding.
Lawrence Hamik of Stuart, the
Legion’s chairman for county
government day, presided at a
roundtable discussion. Stanley
Huffman, immediate past state
department commander, and Dr.
H D. Gildersleeve, Simonson
post commander, spoke brief 1>
County Attorney William W.
Griffin and John R. Gallagher,
an O’Neill attorney, helped sim
ulate a trial.
One hundred thirty-five ju
niors participated. It was con
sidered one of the most success
ful ever held.

Husking Bee Held
At Hibbs Place
Neighbors and friends of the'
late Arthur W. Hibbs participat
ed in a husking bee Wednesday;
at the Hibbs place, 3 Mi miles
north of O’Neill. Mr. Hibbs, 73,
died October 19.
The widow, Bella, and a
daughter, Miss Lillian, reside at
the place.
Minister Moves
to Alma—
AMELIA—Rev. Burnham and
family have moved to Alma
where he will serve the Free
Methodist pastorate there. He
has been pastor of the Free
Methodist church, south of
Amelia, the past year and a
half. ' _

to Appear Here
The Harlem Clowns, a colored
professional basketball team are
coming to O'Neill. After exten
sive correspondence, Sgt. Lowell
Nesbitt of O'Neill national guard
unit, Company D, 195th tank
battalion, has secured a game be
tween the Harlem Clowns and
last year city champions, the
“Tankers”.
They will meet in competition
at the O'Neill high school audi
torium 8 o’clock Monday night.
November 5.
The Harlem Clowns are one of
the most entertaining traveling
basketball groups in the country
and it will be the only chance to
see them in action this year in
this territory.
