Stuart Broncs Lose to Valentine, 46-50 Badgers Move on to Win Title STUART—The scrappy Broncos from Stuart high finished a strong third in last week’s North-Central Nebraska conference cage tourney at Ainsworth. Valentine won the crown, de feating Ainsworth, 53-48. O’Neill was eliminated in the opening round by Ainsworth, 48 44. The Broncos led off Tuesday night, January 31, with a convinc ing 56-34 win over the tall Springview Indians. Starting slowly, Stuart gained a 32-14 halftime lead, mainly on four straight sets by Lowell Seger, Stuart’s co-captain, in the final three minutes before intermis sion. The Broncs’ fast-break roll ed during the second half as both teams substituted freely. Sophomore Dana Bigelow shar ed high-scoring honors for Stuart with Lowell Seger, both collect ing 18. Tuton was high for Springview with nine. Valentine 50; Stuart 46 The NCNC champs, the Valen tine Badgers, had all they could handle in last Thursday’s semi finals, finally subduing the Bron cos, 50-46, with two free throws after the final gun. The hustling Broncs hawked the ball repeatedly while Mike Batenhorst and Dana Bigelow battled on even terms with the tall Badgers under the boards. The lead changed hands through out the game until the last two minutes as Valentine stalled out the game. Valentine led 2-21 at the half. Alan Brewster and Del Stracke led the spirited team attack while Brewster and Batenhorst added 12 apiece and Seger 10 for Stu art. Billeter and Spain led the fine Valentine ball club with 14 and 11 points, respectively. This probably was the best ball game of the year for Stuart. Free throws and height won for Valen tine. Stuart outscored Valentine from the field, 20-19, but could get only six out of 13 from the gratis line as Valentine hit 12 of 21. Stuart 51; Bassett 49 Stuart defeated a good Bassett club in another squeaker, 51-49, to wrap up third place Friday night in the NCNC tourney. Hot shooting Bassett jumped into an early lead and held an eight point bulge, at one time, but buckets by Brewster and Bigelow cut the Bassett margin to 30-26 at the half. A sparkling exhibition of shoot ing saw Stuart score 10 points to Bassett’s none during the first three minutes of the third quar ter and the sharp passing repeat edly hit Mike Batenhorst under neath to keep the lead. With three minutes left, Lowell Seger hit a drive in to apparent ly ice the ball game, but a hustl ing Bassett crew, led by Hazard and Richards, hit four free throws and forced Stuart to stall out the remaining time.
