President Eisenhower in a na tionwide proclamation stressed the fact that farm safety depends upon each individual. He also summarized the week’s importance and objective: “A death toll of 14,000 farm residents each year is a tragic loss to the nation. “The 12th observance of na tional farm safety week will be successful if each farm resident realizes the fact that his safety is in his own hands. “Most important is for the farmer, himself, to make a safety inventory of his home, his equip ment, his actions and his attitudes. “My greetings to every farmer in the United States, to whom I would say: Your safety is in your hands. Please be careful for the sake of your nation and your loved ones.” The average passenger on the New York subway rides 7.5 miles. Death or divorce disrupted 1, 076,000 U.S. families in 1954. — ■ ■' —.. One oi»t of four families in the $7,500-plus income group now owns two cars.
