Federate Raid Still; Driver Disappears _ Granulated Sugar Is Truck’s Cargo 50 Years Ago DeWitt Page met with a pain ful accident when he was driving a wagon up a side-hill and the v agon toppled over and broke Mr. Page’s arm in two places. He walked 12 miles to a doctor fol lowing the mishap. . . Postmaster Walker in Atkinson received an uptodate office chair for a new year’s gift from die postal clerks on the Long Pine and Missouri Valley division. . . Mrs. John Hunt was honored by a group of 25 ladies on the occasion of her 23d wedding anniversary. . . J. P. Hancock of Inman was in town and reported that business is flourishing there. Much hay is being shipped, although the price at present is not the best. 20 Years Ago St. Mary’s cagesters won over O’Neill high, 27-22. . . Up Cherry county way two federal agents arrested six men on charges of vi olating the federal liquor laws. While the agents and the six were in Valentine, a large group had gathered at the site of the still. As the crowd stood around, a van drove up and stopped. The driver opened the door, blinked and took off for the hills afoot. The van . was loaded with five tons of granulated sugar — no one has seen or heard from the driver yet. . . . Cattle buyers are reported scouring the county for,stock that is reported scarce after the fed eral cleanup. There seems to be an increasing demand for hogs also. 10 Years Ago John Watson with the 84th “Railsplitter” division in Ger many, has been promoted from private first class to sergeant. . . A group of friends honored Mr. and Mrs. Austin Hynes at a sur prise party at the Hynes home on the occasion of their silver wed v/edding anniversary. . . Miss Constance Biglin, who is in nurses’ training in Sioux City, has gone to St. Bernard’s hospital in Council Bluffs, la., for further training. . . Nebraska and Holt county went over the top in the sixth war loan drive. Holt coun ty’s quota for series E was $337, 200. Sales were $355,234 or 105 percent of the quota. One Year Ago Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Tomjack of Ewing quietly observed their 60th wedding anniversary at their home in Ewing. . .The Chamber ot Commerce will publish a bro chure to illustrate and point up the advantages of O’Neill — the o.ueen city of north Nebraska. It will be used to induce new busi nesses and industries to locate here. . . Mr. and Mrs. Tom Doo little celebrated their 50th wed ding anniversary at their home in Amelia. They are the parents of seven living children. . . Miss Elsie Cooper of Ewing became the bride of Pfc. Sylas E. Coy of Atkinson and Camp Hale, Colo. Mead Again Prexy Earl I. Mead (above), Scotts bluff feed mill operator who served Consumers Public Pow er district in Nebraska as pres- ■ ident in 1949, last week was re elected president. He succeeds H. G. Greenamyre of Lincoln, formerly of Springview. O'Neill News Mr. and Mrs. Vernie Johnson entertained Mr. and Mrs. Law rence Basler of Wheeling, W. Va., Mr. and Mrs. Dale Curran and family, Mr. and Mrs. James Don lin and family and Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Curran Sunday at a dinner at their home. The occasion honor ed Mr. Johnson’s birthday an niversary. Mr. and Mrs. William Bowker and R. H. Bowker of Neligh spent Monday and Tuesday in Omaha. Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Weber of Butte and Mr. and Mrs. Wil liam Tiefenthaler and son, Greg, of Butte, were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Benson. They attended the baptism of the Ben son’s daughter, DeMaris Jean, at St. Patrick’s Catholic church. Miss Diane DeBacker returned Sunday to Briar Cliffe college after spending the holidays with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. C. OcBsckcr. Cpl. Donald E. Beckwith return ed Sunday to Ft.
