Crosby Okays Ainsworth Project Objection* to Plan Aired La*t Week The controversial Ainsworth irrigational project, a part of the overall Niobrara river basin de velopment plan, Tuesday was given the approval of Gov. Rob ert Crosby during the final hours • of his term of office. The governor, who today (Thursday) turps the reins of state government over to Gov. Elect Victor Anderson, disclosed his approval in a letter to E. J. Walter, jr., regional director of the bureau of reclamation. The bureau’s plans for impounding water in the Snake river in Cher ry county and delivering it through a 50-odd mile canal to the Ainsworth locality (in Brown county) had been criticized by a group of Cherry county ranchers. Only last week the final hear ing tn a series was held. Their opposition was based on these grounds: Possible damage from seepage from the reservoir and canal; di vision of land by the canal; pos sible loss of cattle that might drift into the canal during bliz zards; and a claim that the pro ject would not be economically feasible. Crosby’s okay generally ap proved the reclamation bureau’s plans, which also include devel opment of 66-thousand-acres of irrigable land in the O’Neill area. The controversy between Ains worth enthusiasts and Cherry county objectors has been flaring for several years. The overall Niobrara basin development, which is a part of the Missouri river plan, will cost an estimated 9&-million-dollars. 5 Enlistments in Army Announced The army recruiting office at O'Neill has announced the fol lowing recent enlistments from this area: Fred E. Schafer of Stuart, for signal corps; Edwin E. Burger of Bristow, for ordnance corps; El mer L. Kraft of Bristow, for ord nance corps; Wesley W. Woods of Winnetoon, for medical corps; Jo seph F. Howard, regular army, unassigned. These men went to Ft. Bliss, El Paso, Tex., for further process ing training and reassignment. They will take eight weeks of basic training and then be re assigned to their chosen branches. George Collins Heads Redistricting Unit ' George Collins of Atkinson was elected chairman of the Holt county school redistricting com mittee in session Thursday, De cember 30, at the courthouse as sembly room. Lyle Dierks of Ew ing was named vice-president. Other committee members pres ent were Ira H. Moss of O’Neill, Frank Schmidt of Page and Miss Alice French of O’Neill. Frank Nelson of O’ Neill was on hand Tuesday noon when the Nebraska unicameral legislature convened for the 1955 session. Nelson represents the Twenty-eighth district, cosnisting of Holt, Boyd, Rock and Keya Paha counties. Visit Lincoln— Mr and Mrs. J. F. Contois and Mr. and Mrs. C. E. McVay anc Barbara spent Saturday and Sun day at the home of Mr. and Mrs Harlan Taylor in Lincoln. The lusty new year of 1955 was but a few minutes old when the stork gracefully circled Atkinson Memorial hospital and delivered Diane Faye Scripter, who tipped the scales at 7 pounds 3 ounces. Diane Faye’s arrival was clock ed at 12:10 a.m., January 1, 1955 —a nifty record in any new year’s baby derby and possibly the best record in Nebraska. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Henry Scripter of Atkinson. The mother’s maiden name was Rena Riley. Diane Faye is the fourth child. Dr. N. P. McKee, veteran At kinson physician, presided at the birth. Mr. Scripter is a painter. Diane Faye’s parents will be making a trip to O’Neill soon to cash in on a shower of gifts which leading merchants have provided for the derby winner in coopera tion with The Frontier. The contest marked the ninth annual first baby derby to be sponsored by The Frontier. Mrs. Gus Daniels Burial at Ewing DELOIT — Funeral services were held for Mrs. Gus Daniels at the Methodist church in Ewing on Thursday afternoon, Decem ber 30. Mrs. Daniels, 81, died in the Neligh hospital, Tuesday, Decem ber 28. She suffered a stroke about three weeks before her death. Rev. E. L. Brigdon officiated. Burial was in the Ewing ceme tery. Pallbearers were: Harold Van Vleck, Vearl Tuttle, Herbert Kurpgew'eit, Louis Funk, Ewald and Ernest Spahn. Annie Lizzie Summerer, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. J. N. Sum merer, was born February 18, 1893, on a farm near Chambers. She was married to Gus Dan iels February 28, 1912, and they made their home on a farm south of Clearwater to the time of her death. Six children were born to them, one son, Albert, preceding her in death. Mrs. Daniels is survived by her husband; daughters—Mrs. Thom as Lucas of Clearwater, Mrs. Charles Wright of Ewing and Mrs. Richard Finwal of Ft. Jones, Calif.; sons — Harold and Bud, both of Clearwater; 13 grandchil dren, and one brother, P. W. Summerer of Ewing. Hugh Anderson, Clearwater, Dies CLEARWATER—Hugh Ander son, 74, bachelor farmer, died Sunday morning at his home two miles north of Clearwater. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m., Tuesday at the Meth odist church in Clearwater. He is survived by one brother, William, who lived with him on the farm. Native of Creighton Dies in Dakota— BRISTOW — Robert Allen of Presho, S.D., died Tuesday, De cember 28. Funeral services were conducted Friday, December 31, at Presho. The late Mr. Allen was born at Creighton. His wife is the former Nellie Alford of Monowi. Sur vivors include: Widow, six chil dren, 12 grandchildren and two gr eat-gr andchildren. Elvin Allen of Bristow is a son. ENTER COURTHOUSE BARTLETT — Thieves who broke into the Wheeler county courthouse here early last Thurs day morning escaped with about five hundred dollars in cash, in cluding money in the polio fund. Money was taken from the offices of the county clerk and county treasurer. John R. Bowen, son of Mr. -and Mrs. A. E. Bowen, arrived home last Thursday for a 10-day fur lough, after completing his basic training at Ft. Bliss, Tex. He ex pects to be sent to Ft. Ord, Calif., and will be assigned to an army band after eight weeks of addi tional training at Ft. Ord. St. Anthony’s hospital auxiliary will meet Monday, Jahuary 10, at the hospital at 8 p.m. Mrs. Wrede Dies at 82; 111 3 Months Settles on Homestead in Holt in 1875; Rites on Wednesday Funeral services were conduct ed at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Janu ary 5, from the Methodist church here for Mrs. Addie Wrede, 82, widow of the late Charles Wrede, jr. She died at 6:30 p.m.f'Sunday, January 2, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Henry Martin, in O'Neill. Rev. W. B. Smith, church pas tor, officiated and burial was in Prospect Hill cemetery under the direction of Biglin’s. Pallbearers were Charles Easton of Greeley, Colo., Vem Wrede of Inman, Kenneth Wrede of O’Neill, John Hipke of Springview, Thomas Liddy of O’Neill and Walter Young of O’Neill. Music was furnished by a mixed quartet — Mrs. H. L. Lindberg, Mrs. Donald Loy, D. H. Clauson and Roy Johnson. An overflow crowd attended the services. The late Mrs. Wrede had been hospitalized about three months and went to the home of her daughter only a week before she died. She suffered a heart ailment. Addie Lansworth was born Ap ril 28, 1872, at Madison, Wise., a daughter of Peter J. and Anna Marie Myrland Lansworth. At the age of 3, she came to Holt county with her parents. They home steaded about 15 miles northeast of O’Neill. On July 28, 1898, at Agee, she married Mr. Wrede. The Wredes lived for many years about 13 miles northeast of here near the Red bird creek. They became the parents of two sons and two daughters. Mr. Wrede died in 1936 and one son, Clarence, died In 1950. The late Mrs. Wrede taught school many years in the Agee neighborhood and was well known in northern Holt coun ty. Survivors include: Daughters— Mrs. Henry (Vivian) Martin of O'Neill and Mrs. Gertrude Easton of Greeley, Colo.; son — Earl of Bronson, Mo.; sister — Mrs. Isa Brundage of Norfolk; half-sisters —Mrs. Clara Van Hove of Bris tow; Mae Kerns of St. Joseph, Mo.; Mrs. Ella Manson of O’Neill; Mrs. Goldie Liddy of Lincoln; Mrs. Carl (Pearl) Widtfeldt of O’Neill; Mrs. Nellie Boshart of O’Neill; Mrs. Grace Hammerlin of Norfolk; half-brothers—John and Harry Lansworth, both of O’Neill; Peter Lansworth of Silver Dale, Wise., and Robert Lansworth of Kearney. There are eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. TRACTOR BURNS STUART — The firemen were summoned to a blaze 9% miles northeast of here Friday night to extinguish a tractor fire. The trac tor belonged to Thilo Poessnesker, who was refueling the machine when the blaze started. The com bine he had been pulling was saved. Ewing Visitor, 10, Stricken by Polio EWING— Richard Arlen Fin wall, 10, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Finwall of Ft. Jones. Calif., was srticken Friday night v ith infantile paralysis. He was taken to Antelope Memorial hos pital, Neligh, and later removed to Children’s Memorial hospital, Omaha, where he was placed in an iron lung. The paralysis has affected the boy’s throat and surgeons had to create an opening in order for the boy to breathe. The Finwalls were called to Nebraska last week because of the death of Mrs. Finwall’s moth er, Mrs. Gus Daniels. Frank Straka, 63, Burial at Atkinson Lifelong Resident Dies in Hospital ATKINSON — Frank Straka, 63, retired Atkinson farmer, died about 8 o’clock new year’s morn ing—January 1, 1955—in Atkin son Mmeorial hospital following major surgery. He had entered the hospital the previous day. Funeral services were conduct ed Tuesday, January 4, from St. Joseph’s Catholic church with Rev. Willoam Kelligar officiat ng. Burial was in St. Joseph’s cemetery. The late Mr. Straka, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Straka, was born in Stuart township about six miles southwest of Atkinson on December 6, 1891. He married Mary Schmit. They farmed for many years on the Straka home place now occupied by Edward Jensen, sr. Survivors include only the widow—Mary. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Matthew and John, both of Atkinson. ‘Doc’ Sorey, Wife Married 61 Years ATKINSON — Mr. and Mrs. Bennett A. (“Doc”) Sorey of At kinson on Sunday, December 26, celebrated their 61st wedding an niversary. Bennett Sorey and Miss Lula Mae Courtney were married at Imperial, Chase county, in south western Nebraska. They moved to a farm near Logan, la., and 43 years ago came to Holt county. The Soreys have four children: Guy of Los Angeles, Calif.; Jess of Bassett; Mrs. Henry (Jewel) Swensen of Washougal, Wash., and Mrs. Earl (Opal) Miller of Atkinson; also an adopted daugh ter, Mrs. Burnell (Helen) Kull of Fremont. There are 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. CDA in Business Meet— The Catholic Daughters of Am erica held a business session Tues day evening at the K of C hall. Cards were played for entertain ment. Winners were Mrs. Grover Shaw and Mrs. Hattie Kindlund. Mrs. Shaw also won the door prize. Mrs. John Pribil was chair man of the committee in charge. Railroad Meeting Set January 17 Another public meeting in be half of those enthusiastic about keeping Chicago & North Western railroad trains number 13 and 14 in operation on the 447-mile Om aha-to-Chadron line will be held in O’Neill Monday, January 17. The meeting has been set for the Golden hotel dining room, start ing at 8 o’clock. Invitations are being forward ed to civic groups between Battle Creek and Ainsworth who attend ed a similar meeting here in ear ly November when the C&NW originally announced it was con sidering taking necessary steps to abandon the last two passenger mail-express trains serving most of northeast, northcentral and much of northwest Nebraska. Meanwhile, the C&NW has ar ranged for a special instruction car to be at O’Neill Friday after noon and evening. Rail agents, re lief agents and operators who deal with the public will listen to lectures and slides which are designed to increase efficiency and build goodwill. Alex McConnell, Wife Wed 50 Years EMMET—Mr. and Mrs. Alex McConnell, an Tuesday, Decem ber 28, marked their golden wed ding anniversary. Alex McConnell and Hattie Wheeler were married December 28, 1904, at Dunlap, la., their childhood home. Six children were born to them: Mrs. Walter (Lenora) Puckett of Atkinson, Eli of Atkinson, twins— Howard of O’Neill and Mrs. Harry (Harriett) Little of Omaha and Mrs. Fred (Maxine) Saunto of O’Neill. The McConnells moved into Emmet in 1943. The first Brownie group met at the library Tuesday, January 4. Verna Butterfield was ^hostess. Melba Dobrovolny (third from left) was judged champion and Mary Clair Gilg rated runnerup. Judges were H. W. Heriford of the M&M Bakery & Cafe and Marie Salisbury, home economist for Consumers Public Power district. Miss Dobrovolny will represent the county in state competition January 26 at Lin coln. Lynda Jo Counts 13 Grandparents INMAN—Five generations were represented Sunday at a dinner at. the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Siders at the south edge of In man. Mrs. Anna Taylor, 86, of Chandler, Ariz., who is spending the winter at the Siders home, heads the five-generation group. Others are: Mrs. Ray Siders of Inman, Mrs. Taylor’s daughter; Mrs. Charles Russell of Harvard, Mrs. Siders’ daughter; Mrs. Duane Sukup of Salina, Kans., Mrs. Russell’s daughter, and little Lyn da Jo Sukup, 6 - months - old daughter of Mrs. Sukup. Mrs. Soukup is the former Jac queline Russell. Lynda Jo has 13 grandparents. These include two great-grand mothers and a great-grandfather on the paternal side and two sets of great-grandparents on the ma ternal side—Mr. and Mrs. Siders and Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Russell of Page. Mrs. Taylor, who is 86, is the mother of 11 children — nine of whom are living. She counts 56 grandchildren and 96 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Mrs. Taylor and her husband, the late C. J. Taylor, resided north of O’Neill for many years. About a quarter of a century ago the couple moved to Colorado, later to Chandler, Ariz., where Mr. Taylor died nine years ago. Other guests at the dinner, be sides those pictured, were: Char les Russell, Carolyn and Debbie of Harvard; Mr. and Mrs. Gerold Snyder and daughters of O’Neill; Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Juracek and daughters of Orchard; Duane Sukup of Salina, Kans. Those calling in the afternoon were Mr. and Mrs. Bill Hibbs, Kay, Roddy and Mike of Star and Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Russell. Mrs. Audrey Benash of Beat rice, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Siders, was unable to be present. Johnsons Hosts— Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Johnson were Mr. and Mrs. Fred Roth and family of Atkinson, Mr. and Mrs. Russell Yusten and Mr. and Mrs. James Banks and family. Albert Giedd Junior Giedd and Delores Gillogly of Wagner, S.D., were afternoon guests at the Johnson home. Plan Meeting— Mrs. Nora Mullen entertained the members of St. Rita’s guild Monday evening at her home. Plans were made for the January 20 meeting of St. Patrick’s Altar society at which time St. Rita’s guild will be hosts. Mrs. Skulborstad Hostess— Following a dinner Tuesday evening, Mrs. Palmer Skulborstad entertained her bridge club at her home. Mrs. Richard Nelson w'as a guest and won the high bridge score. Mrs. Leigh Reynold son had the low score. Return to Colorado— RIVERSIDE—Mr. and Mrs. Jim Conway returned Monday to Den ver, Colo., after spending a two tv eeks’ vacation with the Carl Christon family. Yustens Entertain— New year’s day dinner guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Rus sell Yusten were Mr. and Mrs. Bert Henning, Mr. and Mrs. Al bert Henning and family, all of Atkinson, and Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Johnson and family. Guests from Wyoming— RIVERSIDE — Mr. and Mrs. Steve Rickert and daughters of Farson, Wyo., were supper guests Friday of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Na pier. 2 Hurt, New Car Smashed in Mishap AMELIA—Connie Gilman and Nancy Watson were injured in a car accident Tuesday evening, December 28. They had attended a skating party at the Asa Sher mer home and were on their way from the skating pond to the house when the auto in which they were riding struck a deep ditch. The girls suffered facial bruis es and were badly shaken. The car, a new 1955 Ford belonging to Asa Watson, was badly dam aged. The steering wheel was broken off and the radiator was pushed back against the fan. Shirley and Evelyn Thompson, who were also riding in the car, were not hurt but Shirley’s glass es were broken. Page Eagles Oust Orchard from Meet PAGE—The Page Eagles elim inated the Orchard Orioles from the Elkhom Valley - Sandhills Gateway cage tourney at Bruns wick on Monday evening. The fi nal outcome found Page defeating Orchard, 48-38. The Eagles jump ed into a 12-4 first quarter lead, extended the margin to 27-16 at halftime. The third quarter it was Page 43, Orchard 28 and at the bell 48-38. Hugh Troshynski, “pepperpot guard,” led the offensive chores with 14 points. Gary Kemper, Ed Walker and Jerry White chipped in nine, nine and eight, respec tively. Oriole Jim Heminway gar nered 13 joints and teammate Vernon Boelter netted 10 points. Page met Clearwater in the quarter-final cm Tuesday evening. HUSKERS PUNISHED The University of Nebraska Cornhuskers were dull and lifeless Saturday in Miami’s Orange bowl while 70 thousand holidayers—plus a nationwide television audience looked on. Duke Bluedevils won, 34-7. The Huskers turned in one of the worst grid performances of all time. SERVICEMEN RETURN STUART—Sgit. Harvey Nicalaus of Naper and Cpl. Fred Mitchell of Stuart arrived Saturday to spend new year’s at home. They had reached the U.S., Wednesday, December 29, having been in Korea. RIVERSIDE—Lee Fink under went surgery at the O’Neill hospi tal Tuesday morning. Falling Tree Kills Father of 3 Children Ralph Nelson Farmed Near Here 4 Years; Recently to Newport NEWPORT—Ralph Nelson, 45, Rock county rancher who moved to this community from O’Neill in November, 1954, was killed in stantly about 11:15 a.m., Tuesday when struck by a falling tree on the Louis Hall place in Keya Paha county. The accident occurred while Nelson and two other men, Leon ard Foxworthy and Roy Rodgers, both of the Newport community, were felling a large cottonwood near the Niobrara river. The tree had failed to yield and Nelson set out for a wedge. The tree crash ed in his path. County Attorney Thomas Weddell of Keya Paha county investigated and said the death was accidental. The Nelson family resided 1% miles east of O’Neill on the Park er farm, west of the Chicago & North Western railroad tracks, prior to moving onto a ranch 18 0 miles northwest of Newport. Survivors include: Widow; sons —Gary, 13; Kenneth, 11; daugh ter—Marlene, 2Vz. Funeral services will be con ducted at 2:30 p.m., Friday from the Divide Center church at Ly ons. Burial will be in the Lyons cemetery. Atkinson Pair Wedded 54 Years ATKINSON — Mr. and Mrs. John Kenny observed open-house Sunday, January 2, in honor of their 54th wedding anniversary. They were married December 24, 1900, at Albion, moved to north of Amelia in 1907 onto a place known as the George Meals ranch. The Kennys later moved to the MacLachlan farm, southwest of Atkinson. They retired about 10 years ago. The Kennys have four children, 10 grandchildren, six great grandchildren. The children are Raymond, Dwight and Mrs. Ger trude Carr, all of Atkinson, and Mrs. John O’Connell of Emmet. FHA’ ers Kept Busy During December During December the O’Neill chapter of Future Homemakers of America was busily engaged in various Christmas projects. One was the collecting of gifts to be sent to children in foreign coun tries. The FHA also purchased and de corated a large Christmas tree which was placed in the down stairs hall of the school building. A caroling party was held Mon day, "December 13. After singing carols at the hospital and several homes the FHA members and their guests returned to the school where games were played and and refreshments served. Mrs. A. W. Tibbetts and Miss LaVone Thorin drove Army Pfc. Larry Tibbetts to Omaha Satur day from where he left Sunday for Ft. Campbell, Ky. He had been visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Tibbetts, for the past two weeks. Mrs. Tibbets and Miss Thorin returned to O’Neill Sun day. Berigan Is Squadron Officer 2/Lt. Robert Berigan (above), son of Mr. and Mrs. James Ber igan of Atkinson and a former St. Joseph’s hall basketball great, is serving as squadron communications officer with the air force at a base in Japan. Lieutenant Berigan’s wife, the former Nancy Froelich, is residing in O’Neill with their daughter, Kittie, at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Froelich.—U.S. Air Force Photo, > * C.
