Auxiliary Collects Clothing for Needy EWING—Clothing for the needy will be collected by the American Legion auxiliary of Sanders unit 214. Mrs. L. M. Carter noted that all articles should be cleaned and mended if necessary. This project was stressed at the meeting held Thursday evening at the Legion club. The session was called to order by Mrs. Carter, president. Colors were presented, flag salute given and the auxiliary preamble read in- unison, followed by prayer. A report on the district meeting held at Chambers was given by Mrs. Carter. She also stated that Ewing was the site chosen for the March district meeting. Christmas activities for the Unit included four tarlantan dolls, handkerchiefs, socks and cigar-; ettes were sent to the Veterans hospital at Lincoln. Gift packages j were packed for the “Yanks W*ho Gave” with the American Legion giving ten dollars for the purchase of gifts. Mrs. Clarence Hahlbeck and Mrs. Floyd Lee who are putting the finishing touch to comforters made at a special meeting, report ed that materials for another com forter was being collected. Carpet rags will be sewn at the January meeting. The Sanders Post Unit now has a membership of 46, the largest since its organization. They are working hard to keep the district Gavel Bell for Class 2, which they were presented at the Department Convention held in Omaha, for the highest percent over quota in membership in class 2. On adjournment, gifts placed un der the Christmas tree as they entered, were exchanged. The gaily lighted tree was decorated by Mrs. Carter. Mesdames Clar ence Hahlbeck, who subsituted for her mother, Maud Boies, Lloyd Schmidt, R. H. Shain, Hazel Kimes and Harold Harris served refresh ments to about 40 members of the Auxiliary and Legionaires. Other Ewing News Mrs. Robert Pruden and Mrs. Gene Ruby were shopping in O’Neill on Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Funk and children spent the weekend at Au rora where they were guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Morris Smith. On Wednesday, December 8, Ray Funk made a business trip to Omaha. Josephine Cole, house keeper at the Catholic rectory ac companied him. She called on Rev. P. F. Burke at Father Flannigan’s home. Floyd Bergstrom of Newcastle, Wyo., accompanied by his brother in-law, Clyde Chalsant of Idaho, spent the weekend visiting rel atives in Ewing. Mr. Chalsant also spent some time in the Clearwater vicinity. Guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Kropp on Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. Mason Moritz of Stanton and Miss Dorothy Kropp of Norfolk. The Ewing Methodist church will have a Christmas program on Sun day evening, beginning at 8 o’clock. Packages of clothing will be placed under the Christmas tree. These articles will then be re packed and sent to the needy Koreans. Raymond Saiser of Omaha spent Sunday and Monday at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Perry Saiser. Mr. and Mrs. Herman Schroeder had as their guest on Sunday then son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Schroeder. Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey Wood had as their guest for the weekend her parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. Tanck of Norfolk. Mr. and Mrs. William Spence, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Bergstrom, Mr and Mrs. Loyd West, jr., Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Bennett and the Misses Ina Bennett and Barbara West went to Page Friday evening. The men attended a Masonic lodge meeting while the ladies were entertained by members of the Order of the Eastern Star. Sunday dinner guests at the James Mlnarilk home Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. Keith of Neligh, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Patras and Gene, Mr. and Mrs. Ferd Serr of Clear water Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Schroe der and Peggy. The occasion was to join Gene Patras and Mrs. ! Schroeder in celebrating their birthday anniversaries. Miss Judy Jefferies, accompan ied by her aunt, Mrs. Vlasta Rach witz, and sons of Omaha was a weekend guest at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Kermit Jef feries. Mrs. Rachwitz and sons also visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Krachie. The Bridge club met at the home of Mrs. R. G. Rockey on Tuesday afternoon, December 7. Hostesses were Mrs. Rockey, Mrs. Earl Bill ings, Mrs. William Spence, and Mrs. Lyle Dierks, all high score winners of a series of games. Bridge was played with a “new set of rules” which created much fun for the members and one guest, Miss Frances Rotherham. Re freshments were served. Marshal Clifford Hahlbeck and Elvin Hamilton went to the Venus territory where they spent some time hunting. All were enter tained at dinner at the home of the Bohn’s daughter and son-in law, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Prellwitz, and family. In the evening Mr. and Mrs. Boies and Mr. and Mrs. Bohn attended the ice follies. Mr. and Mrs. Allen Pollock spent several days in Omaha last week where they purchased cinemascope equipment for the Eldorado the atre to be installed the latter part of December. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Edwards and children went to Irwin, la., on Saturday where they were over night guests of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Edwards. On Sun day the Edwards family went to Crescent, la., where they attended a family get-together, at the home of Mrs. Edwards’ aunt, Mrs. J. H. Stofferson. The occasion was in honor of the 80th birthday anniver sary of Mrs. Margaret Clark, grandmother of . Mrs. Edwards. A decorated two-tiered birthday cake was baked by Mrs. Edwards. Santa Will Visit Ewing Saturday EWING—Plans for the arrival of Santa Claus in Ewing on Saturday, December 18 have been completed by the Ewing Commercial club. There will be a free movie at the Eldorado theatre beginning at 1 p.m. the main feature of the show is “The Palomino.*’ Two cartoons and one short reel will be in cluded. On conclusion of this enter tainment, Santa will be present to ■give treats to all the boys and girls. Last Thursday evening, the lights were turned on the huge Christ mas tree on Main street. This is topped by a glittering star with blue lights. This is an annual event spon sored by the Ewing Commercial club. Gail Boies is chairman. Exchange Student Is Invited Here The Holt county Rural Youth group held the annual Chirstmas party Friday evening at the courthouse assembly room. The business meeting was held first during which it was decided to ask Dorothy Blatzer of Lincoln —the IFYE student—to speak at the next regular meeting on Jan uary 14. All 4-H leaders, club leaders and anyone else who may be interested is welcome to at tend. After the meeting, games were played and Christmas songs were sung. Square dancing then fol lowed. Later, gifts were exchang ed. Scouts in Yule Party— The O’Neill Girl Scout troop held a Christmas party Monday evening. Following dinner at the M&M cafe, the scouts attended the movie. An unexpected visitor at the party was Santa Claus. After passing out his gifts, he departed for his next stop.
