Minneola Store Burns to Ground O’Donnell Falls from Stack, Dies 50 Years Ago The postoffice and store at Minneola were burned to the ground, together with all the mail and the stock of merchan dise. The origin of the fire is un known. . . John P. O’Donnell died of injuries received when he was knocked from a haystack by a load of hay from the stacker. The hay was carried by a strong wind. . . Holt county has pro duced a bumper apple crop this season. The baskets and barrels at the food emporiums are filled with the home products that are brought fresh to the market each day. . . Mrs. Cavanaugh, who lives south of town in the Dry creek country, had seven head of her best cows killed by lightning in a recent thunderstorm. . . James McNichols of Pocatello, Ida., and Mrs. Hayes of Park City, Utah, are visiting their brother, S. F. McNichols, and other relatives. They expect to remain for a month or six weeks. 20 Years Ago Mr. and Mrs. William Picker ing of Redbird celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary at a surprise party given for them at their home. . . Mrs. Mary Curran, 86, Holt county pioneer, died at the home of a daughter near Amelia. . . Ira Moss received 24 of the mail votes cast and Leo Adams received five in the re publican nomination for clerk of the district court. . . Gilbert Whipple, 80, died at his home southwest of this city. Mr. Whip ple has been a Holt county resi dent since 1880. 10 Years Ago Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Moore cel ebrated their golden wedding anniversary at their home in In man. . . Joe Fuen sold his cafe to Leonard Hamilton, proprietor of the Rite Spot. Joe will go to Nor folk where he has accepted a job as cook in the Merchant’s cafe. . . . Pvt. Vera M. Coleman has completed her basic training at Ft. Des Moines, la., and has been transferred to Rosencrans Field, St. Joseph, Mo. . . New ceiling price posters listing the 40 basic food items are now on display in all eating establishments. The OPA director in Sioux City said these posters must be prominent ly displayed in all eating places. One Year Ago It was announced by the state motor vehicle division that Ne braska will return to the two li cense plate system next year. Enough money was appropriated by the legislature so that the two-plate policy can be contin ued, and the plates won’t be slotted for tabs. . . William A. (“Bill”) Miller of Lincoln, former resident here, was appointed of fice manager for the Holt county production and marketing ad ministration. . . The meanest per son in town is the person who pinched the Sunday collection at I the First Methodist church. . .' Miss Evalina Caldwell, R.N., vet eran of eight years’ missionary service in Nzaret, Columbia, is to speak at Sunday evening church services at the First Pres byterian church. Sergeant Holliday Reenlists in AF— STUART — It has been an nounced by Sgt. James Bell of the Norfolk recruiting office that Sgt. Don E. Holliday, son of Mrs. Daisy Holliday of Stuart, has reenlisted in the air force for a period of six years. Sergeant Holliday has been assigned to the 789th aircraft control and warn ing squadron in Omaha. Sergeant Holliday has eight years prior service. BIG CUCUMBER WALNUT— Eldon Cernousek, 9, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Cernousek, has raised a cucum ber that weighs 2*4 pounds, measures 14 inches in length and 9M; inches in girth. Only water the plant received was rainfall, which was meager in the vicinity. Mr. and Mrs. Victor Halva of O’ Neill brought the cucumber to The Fronteir office for display. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Haas and family left Friday for their home in St. Louis, Mo., after spending the past two weeks here visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Valla. Mrs. Herbert O. Brennan . . . weds former O'Neillile in chapel ceremony at U.S. Military academy. AAA A ..... — ■ . ... w n m Captain Brennan Weds New Yorker Miss Mary Alice Farabaugh, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. C. L. Farabaugh of Cornwall-on-Hud son, N.Y., and Capt. Herbert O. Brennan, son of Mrs. F. M. Bren nan of Minneapolis, Minn., for merly of O’Neill, and the late Colonel Brennan, were united in marriage Monday, August 23, at the Catholic chapel of the Most Holy Trinity at the U.S. Military academy, West Point, N.Y. Rev. Joseph P. Moore of West Point officiated at the nuptial mass and marriage ceremony. The bride, given in marriage by her father, chose a gown of white tulle with inserts of Chan tilly lace fashioned with a bouf fant skirt, V-neckline and short sleeves. Her shoulder-length veil of French illusion fell from a shell hat of tulle and lace. She carried a colonial bouquet of blue carnations. Miss Barbara Farabaugh of Cornwall-on-Hudson was maid of-honor for her sister. The bridesmaids were Miss Patricia Brenann of O’Neill, sister of the bridegroom, and Miss Anne Slat tery of Pomfret, Conn., a cousin of the bridegroom. The bride’s attendants appeared in waltz length gowns of blue taffeta and carried colonial bouquets of white carnations. Their pillbox style hats were of hlue iar*e Capt. Henry E. Emerson of Milford, Pa., was the bestman. Ushers were Capt. Felix A. Blanchard, Capt. John J. Mur phy, Capt. Howard B. Arnold, Capt. Brent Scowcroft and Capt. William Y. Smith. George L. Mott was the vocal soloist accompanied by Ross Far abaugh, organist, cousin of the bride. A reception for 175 guests fol lowed the wedding ceremony at the home of the bride’s parents, 22 Cherry avenue, Cornwall-on Hudson. For traveling the bride wore a dress of gray shantung with pink accessories and a corsage of pink camellias. After a wedding trip to upstate New York and Canada, the couple will be at home at West Point, where Cap tain Brennan is an instructor at the academy. Mrs. Brennan, until her mar riage, was a free lance artist. She is a graduate of Mt. St. Mary at Newburgh, N.Y., and Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, N.Y. Captain Brennan was graduated from St. Mary’s academy. O’Neill, in 1943, and attended the United States Military academy at West Point where he received his commis sion in the air force in June, 1947 He is a veteran of more than one hundred combat missions in the F-80 Shooting Star jet in Korea where he was a member of the “Black Panther” squadron. He received the distinguished flying cross in the fall of 1951 “for"dis playing outstanding leadership skill and courage on a combat mission over Korea.” Out-of-town guests attending the wedding were Mrs. F. Bliss— SPENCER — Pvt. Richard D. Doty, son of Art Doty of Spencer, recently began eight weeks of army basic training in the anti aircraft artillery replacement training center at Ft. Bliss, Tex. Ft. Bliss, established as a fron tier outpost more than a century ago, is located in west Texas on the Mexican border, adjacent to El Paso. MAKES 10 JUMPS Pfc. Larry Tibbetts left for Ft.
