75 Ewing Students
Participate at O’Neill
EWING — The Ewing public
school was one of the 28 schools
to enter the three-day district
music contest which was held at
O’Neill and concluded on Friday
evening. Paul Cooper, director
of music in the Ewing school,
and the 75 students who partici
pated, worked hard in prepara
tion for this event for the past
several weeks.

350 Head of Cattle Today

• There will be around 350 head of cattle on the market to
day (Thursday). The offering will include several loads
of light yearling steers, between 150 and 200 steer and
heife.. calves, axrd the balance of the offering will be mixed
cattle and butcher cattle. The market has been strong this
week.
• The hog sale will get underway at 12 o'clock noon.

Miss May Faye Whetham, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert
Whetham of Spencer, and Willard Leo Van Buren, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Ralph Van Buren of O’Neill, were married Saturday,
April 3, at the Methodist church in O’Neill. Rev. Wallace B.
Smith, pastor, officiated at the services. Mr. Van Buren has been
employed in Atkinson.—O’Neill Photo Co.
Patrolman Dies
in Pistol Duel
Lloyd and Leon Grandsinger,
brothers and natives of Wewela,
S.D., have been charged with
first - degree murder and have
pleaded innocent at arraign
ment before Cherry County
Judge C. H. Elliott at Valentine.
Lloyd, 22, was hunted down
by a huge posse after the fatal
shooting early Friday of State
Highway Patrolman Marvin
Hansen. Grandsinger, in a sworn
statement, said he fired a shot
at Hansen with a .22-calibre pis
tol after Hansen and County
Sheriff Bill Freeman had stop
ped the brothers with a road
block while searching for a
stolen car. The Grandsinger ve
hicle was towing another car at
the time.
Leon surrendered but Lloyd
fled. In an exchange of shots
with Hansen, the patrolman was
hit in the stomach and died.
Lloyd is being held at Valen
tine; Leon at Rushville. A search
is on for the pistol, which is be
lieved to be in the Niobrara
river.
Lloyd was arrested after a 16
hour search. He fled after the
shooting and ^vas hunted by a
large posse.

in Yankton, S.D. On Saturday
the Johnsons made a business
trip to Atkinson and on Monday
they visited her mother, Mis.

and Oakland where they will

Monday, April 5, where Ewald
consulted a doctor concerning
his health. . . Some of the chil
dren at the Royvan Day home
have been ill with mumps. . .
Walter Menenbroker is conva
lescing at the Antelope Me
morial hospital following severe
burns on his hands and face re
ceived when the shop in which
he was working was consumed
by fire. . . Jo Ann Funk, second
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clar
ence Funk, underwent minor
surgery at the Neligh hospital
recently. Janet, the youngest
daughter became ill and both
were hospitalized at the same
time. Both are home and “doing
fine” at present.
LYNCH — Marleine S t r e i t,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed
ward Streit, broke her lower
right arm while playing on the
Teeter-totter at school Monday,
April 5. . . Martin Jehorek, jr.,
re-entered the loeal hospital on
Wednesday, April 7, for furth' r
treatment.
O’NEILL—Mrs. Alice Bridges
was released from St. Joseph’s
hospital in Omaha last Thurs
day. She will remain in Omaha
with her brother, Clayton Hard
ing, for the next 10 days while
she receives out-patient treat
ment.

interview H. G. Bobst of Lin
coln, state conservationist, and
Harry Massey of Broken Bow,
state president of the Nebraska
Association of Soil Conservation
districts, on the “Care of Our
Soil” program over WNAX,
Yankton.
The program should be of in
terest to all farmers interested
in conservation. Mr. Bobst ex
plains changes under the reor
ganization of the department of
agriculture and Mr. Massey will
report on his trip to New Or
leans, La., to the national con
vention of soil conservation dis
trict supervisors. Mr. Massey is
also mayor of Broken Bow and
chairman of the Custer county
soil conservation district boarj
of supervisors.
