St. Joe Bluejays Become ’54 Cage Champions Defeat Page Eagles in Tourney Finals; O’Neill in 3d Place Coach Pat Miller’s St. Joseph’s hall Bluejays in three games rolled to the championship of the Holt county high school basket ball tourney, which came to a close here Friday night. The Josies ousted Stuart, 45-28, in the first round, smacked O’ Neill high, 56-49, in the semifi nals, and won over Page in a walk, 69-41, in the title game. * * * Semifinals . . . Pa^e 45; Atkinson 44 Except for a shortlived first quarter, no more than one point separated the Atkinson Baleis and. Page Eagles during Thurs day’s night semifinal opener in the annual Holt county high school basketball tournament. Page finally won, 45-44, as play ers, popsters and partisans limned away from a hectic game. Page grabbed an early lead with Hugh Troshynski and Walk .er potting two fielders each and . ' • w ith Larry Heiss and Frahm also getting into the scoring act. At the end of the first the Eagles led, . 13-8. During the second period, Hus ton and Frickel narrowed the gap - for the Balers and from then on it was a whale of a ball game. .• Page led, 23-22, at intermission and 38-37 at the end of the third. • Heiss rolled up 17 points for Page while Frickel and Huston shared Baler scoring honors with • 14 points each. Tne Jays built an early lead and Coach Paul Baker’s kids never overcame the deficit. With Bill Slattery and Walt Ries ; working under both buckets, the Eagles were denied possession of the ball and simply yielded to a better ball club. Larry Chace, O’Neill’s crack forward, was limited to four fielders compared to his usual 10 to 15 quota. He did connect on 14 out of 20 freethrows, however, tor a neat 22-point total Russ Mi ner tallied 12. Ries with 19, Schmit with 16 and Gokie with 12 led the Jays. St. Joe built a 16-11 first-quar ter lead; stayed in front 29-23 at the half, and went into the final period with a 44-31 advantage; Boxscore: ST. St. Joe 69; Page 41 The hustling Page Eagles, led by a capable chap named Larry Heiss, made it an interesting first quarter during the title game played Friday night before a standing-room-only crowd. But in the second stanza the Josies pull ed away and won it with the greatest of ease. The Bluejays simply had too much height and reserve strength for the plucky Eagles, who had worked hard to gain the finals. Most of the Josies’ points were amassed under the basket, peck ing away until somebody laid it in, or on the fast downfloor break, which caught the Eagles napping. St. Joe led 16-13 at the end of the first period, pulled away 35-22 at the half, and enjoyed a 51-34 advantage at the end of the third. John Gokie, St. Joe guard, led the winners with 10 fielders and four freethrows — a total of 24 points. Two of his fielders were were products of the fast break, long meshing jobs, but the others When Page lost Heiss via the foul route in the fourth, the Eag les lost their best point-getter and their only guy with height. From then on it was murder. Heiss scored 15 points during the j first half, and the Jpsies succeed ed in putting the clamps on him in the second half. Heiss scored 18 points.
