Spearman Gets 36 Points for Victors Eagles Bow, 52 - 60, in Frenzied Game Coach Paul Baker’s O’Neill high Eagles ran headlong into a curious 6 ft. 4 in., 215-pound guy named Chuck Spearman at Ains worth Friday night. Before Mr. Spearman went to the showers, having been ejected with five personal fouls, he had racked up 36 points and had set the stage for an impressive 60-52 win for the Ainsworth Bulldogs over the Eagles. Baker’s kids led until the final period. Then, with Spearman red hot and his mates shooting with —(''anny accuracy, Ainsworti pulled ahead in a frenzied finish. One O'Neill cheerleader, Janet Hull, fainted during the waning minutes and the game had to be held up while she limped from the room where % only bedlam reigned. O’Neill held a 16-11 first quar ter lead, owned an uncomfortable 26-25 advantage at intermission, and the teams were tied at 37 all at the end of the third. It wasn’t until the final two min utes of play either team held more than a five-point lead. What wrecked the Eagles’ chances was the painfully ac curate bombarding by the Bull dogs. They hit 57 percent of their field tries and 75 percent of their freethrows, and you gotta consult the professional books to find a better showing. Nobody on the Eagles’ club could handle Mr. Spearman, who collected 19 points the week be fore while the ’Dogs were down ing Stuart, 44-40. His forte is pouring 'em in at vital moments. Larry Chace, only regular ’-'oldover from last year’s North I Central conference championship ! O’Neill‘3 team, annexed 25 points which might have looked better | except for Spearman’s whopping j total Thirteen of Chace’s points ; ; were freethrows. Ainsworth hit j 12 out of 16 gratis tries, while I O’Neill connected on only 20 out ! of 38. The Ainsworth Bullpups hit the O'Neill seconds, 47-25, in the prelim. It was a ragged, so-so game played be fore a pint-sized crowd. It was the performance at the freethrow lane and the difference in personal fouling that netted the Eagle victory — the Baker kids hitting 18 of 26 tries while Creighton annexed five of nine tries. O'Neill jumped to a 16-9 first quarter margin, went ahead 30-17 at the half and held a 38-33 margin at the end of the third. Duane Booth, O’Neill guard, racked up 18 points — eight of them were freethrows. Millard led Creighton with 12. In a prelim, the O’Neill sec onds were hit, 22-34, by the Creighton scrubs. The Cards, however, turned in their best performance in the four games they’ve played this season. The Injuns simply were too mature, speedy and sharp for the academy crew. The Indians led 32-15 at half time. Terry Wanser, St. Mary’s forward, hit 10 points for the Scarlet, while Morris Bordo, cen ter, and Tony Bordo, forward, led the Scalpers with 14 and 1C points, respectively. Boxscore: ST.
