Eagles Retain City
Cage Championship
St. Mary’s Buried in
Avalanche
Coach Paul Baker unveiled his !
1953-'54 O’Neill high cage squad
in a precision pertormance Fri- |
day night. The eagles opened
with a barrage of baskets and ;
rode to an easy 60-39 victory over |
the challenging St. Mary’s acad- I
emy Cardinals.
The Eagles, defending city
champs, rolled up a 10-2 margin
in the first four minutes—al
though St. Mary’s scored first.
It was no contest—almost—from
then on out.
The Cards lost a 43-48 decision
to Inman on the O’Neill maples
three nights earlier, but the Baker
kids were in their first outing of
the season.
Last year's North - Central
conference champions were
• supposed to have been hard hit
by graduation. But Baker un
veiled a smoothly-oiled mach
ine playing conventional, hard
driving basketball.
The Eagles’ defensive had the
Scarlet pretty well bottled up
until the final stanza when Baker
.liberally used the reserves.
O’Neill high led 19-9 at the
• first quarter, 39-16 at intermis
sion, and 51-23 going into the
final stanza.
Coach Bob Berigan’s academy
kids-had their scoring pretty well
distributed, but were weak on
the rebounds.
• A large crowd filled the audi
torium despite adverse road con
ditions and other aftermath of
Thursday’s blizzard.
The triumph was a birthday
anniversary present for Baker.
His boys hit 49 percent of their
field tries during the first, all
layups, and finished with a 42
percent record.
In a prelim, the O’Neill high
seconds scuttled the academy re
serves, 42-23.

Defensive Switch
Enables Triumph
The St. Mary’s academy Card
inals changed horses in the mid
dle of the stream Tuesday night
at Elgin and rolled to a 38-33
victory over St. Boniface acad
emy.
St. Bon led 22-12 at halftime.
During the first two stanzas, the
Cards’ man-to-man defense fail
ed to check the opponents’ of
fensive. When the Cards shifted
to a zone type defense in the
small, low-ceiling Elgin gym, the
story changed and Coach Bob
Berigan’s sharpshooters wheeled
into action. Duane Weier, the 6-3
Card center, bucketed 10 points
for high scoring laurels while
Terry Wanser and Benny Bazel
man pressed closely behind with
eight and seven points respect
ively.
It was the Cardinals’ first win
in three outings thus far this
season.
In a preliminary, the Card sec
onds were spilled, 16-32, by the
St. Bon reserves.
