house legislature for Nebraska.

Wednesday night, November 25,
Martin said, “Petitions are now
being circulated in the state to
get 65,000 signatures for placing
on the ballot next year the prop
osition of a partisan, two-house
legislature.”

for a partisan legislature the
liick of responsibility on the part
of the present legislators.
“These men are not elected on
any. platform and do not stand
for anything in particular. If
elected on a partisan basis, both
parties set forth very clearly the
platform, and anyone elected to
- the legislature on a partisan basis,
is bound by that platform,” hi
declared.
With regard to the proposed
two-house system, Martin add
ed: “In the proposed basis of
change in the legislature, we
have followed the national gov
ernment with a senate composed
of members elected on a geo
graphic basis and the lower house
fleeted on a population basis. In
th£ senate, outstate counties such
* as Holt are going to have more
representaion than ever before.”
In conclusion, Martin told the
group that an increased member
. ship in a two-house system will
help control the lobby influence
upon the legislature, with the
statement, “When you have a
two - house system where both
houses have to pass upon legis
lation, the lobbyists’ power of
persuasion is going to be curtail
ed. This is the most important
feature of the two-house sysem,”
he concluded.
John O’Neill, chairman of the
Holt Young Republican club,
presided. Only a small handful
of young and adult republicans
heard Martin’s talk.

Mr. and Mrs. Axel Borg re
ceived a letter from Mrs. Donald
Borg last week stating that they
were shipping their car home
and might be starting home
. themselves soon after the first
of December. Donald is station
ed at St. Jeans, France. He has
spent two years overseas.
Mr. and Mrs. Victor Halva and
their son, Fred of Omaha, were
Thanksgiving dinner guests in
the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ed
ward Pavlik of Verdigre.
