The president, Mrs. Glen Grimes,

session. Each member gave a
dollar or a gift worth that mucn
for the Childrens Memorial hos
pital in Omaha.
Mrs. Charles Grimes gave an
interesting book report. The les
son on “Easier Housekeeping”
was presented by Mrs. H. C.
Walter and Mrs. E. R. Carpenter.
Refreshments were served by
the hostesses. The next meeting
. will be in November at the home
of Mrs, Clarence Young.

One thousand persons, includ
ing a delegation from the O’Neill
area, attended a Jehovah’s Wit
nesses convention in Omaha dur
ing the weekend.
Principal speaker was C. W.
Rieger, who for many years has
been connected with Watchtower
society foreign service work. At
present he is serving assemblies
in a nine-state area from Ken
tucky to Montana and from Kan
sas to Minnesota. His keynote
address was entitled, “Publish
the Word of Jehovah.”

turned Friday evening from a
10-day stay in the Oakland hos
pital. He is "very much improv
ed” after having suffered a
stroke. . . Mrs. Jack Taylor re
turned Wednesday, October 14,
from University hospital, Omaha,
where she had submitted to two
major operations. Her condition
is “satisfactory.” . . Archie Ash
by recently lost two fingers in a
power saw accident. He has been
released from St. Anthony’s hos
pital. . . Miss Hyldred McKim
was taken to St. Anthony’s hos
pital at 3:3t) a.m., Saturday for
emergency surgery and her sister,
Miss Wilma, entered the hospital
several hours later for medical
treatment. The year daughters of
Mr. and Mrs. Lyle McKim. Both
were “improving” Wednesday.
AMELIA— Mrs. Lindsey and
Florence visited Mrs. Art Kai
ser Sunday afternoon. Mrs. Kai
ser recently returned home from
St. Anthony’s hospital, O’Neill,
after a major operation. . . Bill
Ragland has been suffering with
a back ailment the past couple
of weeks. . . Several children
were absent from school a few
days last week on account of
sickness. Among the absentees
were Marcia Widman, Joan Ful
lerton and Dale Fullerton. . .
Mrs. Mae Sageser, Mrs. Bertha
Sammons and Mrs. Alice Prewitt
were on the sick list. . . Little
Leslie Forbes was ill Friday. His
grandmother, Mrs. Lew Forbes,
cared for him while his mother
was at school.
LYNCH— Mrs. Joseph David
sprained her ankle Sunday eve
ning. She is “getting along nice
ly.” . . Cal Conklin has been con
fiend to his bed this week with
pneumonia. . . Mrs. Robert Keck
ler of Lucas, S.D., was dismissed
from the Sacred Heart hospital
Monday, October 12, and is re
cuperating at the home of her
daughter, Mrs. Waldon, at Ve
nus. . . Lyle Hoffman severely
burned his lower and upper arm
on Friday, October 16, when the
tar which he was heating for the
construction of government grain
bins at Spencer suddenly caught
fire. First aid was immediately
given but the burns have been
quite painful.
EMMET—Betty Perry, daugh
ter of Mr. and Mrs. Dean Perry,
while playing on the school
grounds Sunday bumped her foot
on the slippery slide. The foot
was badly bruised. She was taken
to a doctor but no bones were
broken. A small cast was placed
on the bruise.

SOUTH OF STUART—Florian
Scholz took his father, Charles
Scholz, to O’Neill Monday, Octo
ber 12, where he entered St. An
thony’s hospital to have the cast
changed on his leg. Mr. Scholz
was able to return to his home
in Stuart the following day.

son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Jar
mas, is recovering satisfactorily
from a vertebrae operation in
Orthopedic hospital, Lincoln. . .
Tom Engelhaupt is a patient in

the meeting and had charge of
the business session in the ab
sence of the president. The devo
tionals were led by Mrs. Sexton
and the mission study was given
by Mrs. Louie Nielson.
The Christmas gifts this year
will be sent to the Omaha City
Missions. The next meeting will
be October 29 at 2 p.m., in the
church sanctuary. It is the “pray
er and self denial” meeting.
The bazaar and 12 o’clock din
ner will be held in the basement
of the church on November 3
instead of October 29, as given
in the year book. The public is
invited.

ATKINSON—Funeral services
were conducted Saturday morn
ing, October 17, from St. Joseph’s
Catholic church in Atkinson for
Edwin Anthony Straka, 28-year
old Atkinson machinist, who
died Thursday, October 15, in
Atkinson Memorial hospital.
had been in ill health about
three years.
The late Edwin Anthony Straka
was born November 30, 1924, on
a Holt county farm, the son of
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Straka. He
attended St. Joseph’s high school
and on September 10, 1945, he
married Miss Rose Laible at Stu
art. Survivors include the widow;
two daughters—Patricia Ann and
Joan Kay; an infant son, born 12
hours following Mr. Straka's
death; his parents—Mr. and Mrs.
Joseph Straka; and three broth
ers.
