    3 Bikes to Safety Essay Winners
The bicycle safety campaign
wa$ given added emphasis this
week when three new bikes were
secured to be given away free to
boys and girls.
Gambles will give one new
tike, Tri - State hatchery and
Wallace and Kersenbrock togeth
er are giving another, and Mrs.
Georgia Rasley, owner of the
Royal theater, is joining with R.
V. Fletcher, owner of the Drive
In theater, in giving the third bi
cycle.
These bicycles will be awarded
as prizes for these three con
tests:
(1) Slogan contest for chil
dren below 8 years of age
(2) Safety essay contest for
children 10-years-old and below.
(3) Safety essay contest for
children over 10-years-old.
Boys and girls, get out your
pencils and get busy! Here are
the essay contest rules:
Essays must be about bicycle
safety.
Children 10 - years - old and
younger must have 200 words in
their essays. Children over 10
yeare-old must have 400 words.
Neatness, spelling and punc
tuation will be considered. In
clude your name, age and ad
dress.
Entries must be in .by 6 p.m.,
Wednesday, July 22. Entries may
be left at the county agent’s of
fice or with Mrs. Charles Rich
ter, who is contest chairman.
Winners will be announced
Friday morning, July 24, at 10
o’clock at the American Legion
auditorium. Presentation will be
made that evening immediately
prior to the bicycle parade. The
lucky winners will lead the pa
rade, riding on their new bikes.
Rules for the safety slogan con
test are:
Slogan must be about bicycle
safety. Include your name, age
and address.
Only Children 8-years-old and
below may enter. Contest closes
at 6 p.m., Wednesday, July 22.
Entries may be left at the county
agent’s office or with Mrs. Neil
Dawes. Announcement of winner
and presentation of bicycle same
as for essay contest. There will
be many other dandy prizes for
the runnersup
“We are very grateful for the
fine response we received in
helping with these bicycles and
other prizes,” explained a club
spokesman. A complete list of
donors will be published later.
The bicycle safety poster con
test closes on Monday, July 17,
Bring your poster with you to
the Friday meeting at 10 a.m., in
the American Legion auditorium.
Give the posters to Mrs. Charles
Crook, poster contest chairman,
and w'innefs will be announced
and prizes awarded. Be sure to
include your name, age and ad
dress. The winning poster will be
displayed in a store window.
The bicycle rests will be given
in the evenings of July 27, 28, 29
and 30, at 7 o’clock, in the roped
off area near the downtown dis
trict. Boys and girls from the
northwest part of O’Neill should
come Monday evening at 7 o’
clock. Children from the north
east part of town on Tuesday
evening; youngsters from the
southeast part on Wednesday
evening, and the southwest on
Thursday.
Interested dads and friends are
helping with these tests. If you
would like to help, see Charles
Beilin. Parents are cordially in
vited to come and watch. These
will not be difficult feats—only
what you boys and girls do each
day with your bikes, starting
and stopping, giving ha/.d sig
nals, swerving to avoid a bump
in the road, turning corners and
so on.
Be sure to come Friday morn
ing because Mrs. Beilin will ex
plain more about the tests so you
can practice at home. Don’t for
get, every boy and girl will have
Scotch-lite put on his or her bike.
Present your identification card
to Charles Richter and he will
put the Scotch-lite on for you.
The big bicycle parade is to
assemble Friday evening, July
24, at 7 o’clock, at the courthouse
annex. There will be dandy
prizes for all the following di
visions:
(1) Best bike group.
(2) Prettiest bike.
(3) Funniest bike.
(4) Most original bike.
(5) Most safety - equipped
bike.
(6) Bike with best safety
slogan.
(7) Oldest bike.
(8) Division for youngsters
who have attended the safety
meetings and taken part in the
campaign, but have no bikes as
yet.
Friday there were 105 boys
and girls attending. Sponsors of
the Willing Workers club, which
is boosting the overall bike safe
ty movement, are hoping at least
150 kids will be present.

their wedding anniversary. The
