When the boy downstairs caught
scarlet fever, the quarantine naturally
blocked the way to the MacLorens*
who rented the third floor of the big
house- To make matters worse the
MacLorens’ pup chewed off the tele
phone cord.
It presented a head-scratching
problem to Hank Carter, repairman
from the telephone company. Cer
tainly the isolated family badly
needed a phone, but if you can’t get
in, you can’t connect. Or, just a
minute—maybe you can.
A glance through a basement win
dow told Hank his idea would work.
He connected a long wire to the
terminal just inside the sill, then at
tached a telephone to the other end.
Unlimbering a ladder and a long tree
trimmer from his truck, Hank then
ran the wire up the side of the house,
hoisted the phone with the trimmer
to eager hands in the third st#ry
window.
Quarantine or not—the MacLorens
had their phone.

Though dial systems are re
markably trouble-free, the routine
upkeep to keep them that way
comes to $7000 an hour for the
whole Bell System. The cost of
keeping telephone service good
can’t be avoided and these costs
must be met with adequate rates.
