A call for volunteers went out six weeks ago when it came time to unpack and uncrate the tremendous inventory of equipment and fix tures for the new hospital. Young and old re sponded. John Kennedy, 72 (left), Edmund Car nev (center) and George Janousek, 25-year-old businessman, were among those who responded. Some of the equipment had been in storage here many months awaiting the completion. Other volunteer unpackers and bed-erectors were James W. Rooney, Alfred Ross, William W. McIntosh (bending over crate) and Rev. Kenneth Carl (left background). Minutes Record Names of Participants— The minutes of the very earli est communitywide meetings, from which the St. Anthony’s hospital mow was born, includ ed the names of these persons who were present: James M. Hospital day is celebrated each year on May 12—the anniversary of the birthday of Florence Nightingale. Early Nurse— One of the first registered nurses in this community was Jennie Cain, daughter of Jack Cain, for many years night mar shall in O’Neill. Medical facili ties and conveniences were re stricted to the limited medical progress of the day, but all agree that Jennie Cain was both pleas ant and efficient in the sick room.
