A Small Can of Paint Can Make
Big Difference in Your House
By BLANCHE SPANN PEASE
Spring began officially last
week and if you aren t thinking
in terms of new looks in the
house or a new look in the line
of clothes, its’ time you did.
Maybe you can't do much, or
* have much, but lady a can of
paint, even a little one, can make
more difference in a house than
anything you can think of.
A can of quick enamel can do
up a whatnot, some chairs, the
children’s toys or what have you
in double quick time and for
very few pennies. Let not the
spring come without a bit of fur
bishing, it will give your heart a
lift . . and if it’s plastic curtains
for the kitchen, it won't put
much of a dent in your pocket
book.
Sometimes an old iron bed
can be made to look neat and
attractive with a coat of enam
el in a color to harmonize with
the furnishing* of the room.
The finishing or refinishing of
accessories or occasional articles
for your house is fun. It's a real
adventure. Often you can buy
unfinished furniture already cut,
you put it together yourself and
finish it. You can brighten a
room by using contrasting colors.
There's where your originality
comes in.
You can even refinish such
things as waste baskets, lamp
bases, bookends, and flower pots.
Give a thought to brightening up
the kitchen some way while
you're at it.
If you’re going to wax wood
work, be sure you use the right
finish. One finish is secured by
varnishing woodwork and when
dry, applying a coat of wax and
rubbing it to a polish. In this
case, the wax is used as a polish.
The other way is to stain and
fill the wood and apply the wax
without any preliminary coat.
This is a real wax finish because
the wax is both the wearing and
the finishing coat.

SAYS SANDHILL SAL
There are now a million more
women than men in the United
States. God must love the wom

he made more of them? If this
keeps up, things will come to a
fine kettle of fish. But, of course, ■
there are still plenty of suckers
around.
Puns are fun. It’s fun to pun.
Spice your conversation with

Dear Blanche:
Spring is here, after the long
| wint r and everybody feels like
eating springy dishes. In the gar
1 den new asparagus will be pop
ping up in a few weeks and ba
! by lettuce and green onions, fte
I fore we know it. And then will
come those luscious strawberries.
So I am sending you some reci
pes for springtime!
ASPARAGUS
Wash asparagus thoroughly,
snap off tough stalk ends, tie it
in small bunches ami stand
bunches upright in a deep kettle
or the bottom of a double boiler.
Pour boiling water up to within
1 inch of the tender tips. Add
salt and cook for about 15 min
utes or until tender. (The deep
tup of the double boiler or an
other kettle makes a good cov- |
ier). Drain and serve with hot
melted butter and lemon. Or
brown some butter, fry some j
bread crumbs in it and pour ov
er asparagus. Or pour over it a
cream sauce into which you
have put some chopped hard
boiled eggs.
