Tuesday, Dec. 25 MUSIC BY LEO TEPLY’S Bohemian Band Cards Split °with Josies and Trinity The St. Mary’s Cfirdinals made history this week. They polished off St. Joseph’s hall, of Atkinson, 19-16, and lost to Holy Trinity, of Hartington, 24-34. Both games had special signifi cance. The Josies, a former pow er in state basketball circles, are accustomed to punishing the Hill toppers. Not so Thursday night at Atkinson. The loss Tuesday evening to the Trojans at Hart ington spelled the first reversal of the season for Duke Kersen brock’s kids. St. Mary's 19, St. Joe 18 ATKINSON—For some inex plicable reason point-getting in quantity was not in the book here Thursday night. Both teams were more concerned with the other guys’ offense than with their own. Consequently, the first quarter score was 4-2 in favor of O’Neill, the intermissicn tally was 11-9 with the Josies in front, the 3d period count was 16-13 with the Jays still in front and the final was 19-16 with SMA surging ahead in the closing mo ments. Don Becker led the field with 9 points for the Cards; Gokie got 8 for the losers. j In a prelim the SMA seconds copped, 16-12, in another low scoriag fray. The Holy Trinity Tro jans, avenging a 36-30 setback only a week before, capitalized ! on the gratis flips to sink the Cards—their first loss of the cam paign. The Trojans connected on 16 of 24 tries—a nifty .667 aver age—while the Cards failed in that department, connecting on only 8 of 23 attempts. The Cards journeyed over a long, hazardous road and there was an ominous note in the air that led to their disaster. The Trojans led 10-5 at the quarter gun, 18-10 at halftime, 26-18 at the 3d. The SMA reserves copped, however, however, 24-18.
