Br BLANCHE SPANN PEASE
My goodness gracious, molasses
and pumpkin pie. . . if tain’t only
a few days until Christmas is
right in our laps!
Hope you’ve sent your package
to the service man in the U. S.,
and if you haven’t, get it in the
mail pronto.
Pack those cookies, cakes and
other goodies in popped corn. It
doesn’t weigh much and it does
protect a lot.
Aluminum foil is fine for wrap
ping such goodies if you can buy
it. It's sort of scarce these days.
Remember to send enough good
°ies if the package goes to a serv
ice man, so that he can share with
his buddies.
You can make popcorn trees for
home decorations. You’ll need 6
cups popped corn. Place it in a
large greased bowl. Sprinkle with
2 teaspoons salt Stir over low
heat, 1 Vi teaspoons butter, % cup
molasses and V* cup sugar. Boil
fc> hard boil stage.
Pour syrup slowly over popped
com, mix till every kernel is coat
ed. Grease hands and press mix
ture into a small greased funnel.
Push toothpick tree trunk into 2
tree so a half inch protrudes.
Remove tree while still warm.
Push toothpick tree truck in o 2
large gum drops. Place on a lace
doily. Top with a small colored
gum drop. Trees may be decor
ated with colored sugar, bits of
fruit or candy.
Husband Surprises;
No Birthday —
Mrs. Reuben Redlinger, of
Page, wins today’s 3-months sub
scription prize.
'Dear Blanche:
i The man who whispers in a wellp
About the things he has to tell,
Will never make as many dollars,
As he who climbs a tree and hol
lers!
Say, ladies, what do you know?
My husband came home last night
from town and, with no birthday
or special event at all, surprised
me with a new electric mixer,
one of those small hand mixers.
My but it’s handy.
I’ve mixed up an angel food
cake, frosting for cake, beat my
ice cream and mashed potatoes
with it already, and really I’m
amazed and can say, How did I
ever do all the beating before?
Believe me, I think I’ll make a
good many good thinjgs now.
Here I include a recipe for well
just any meal these nice cool days.
ROLLED PANCAKES WITH
MEAT FI LUNG
Two eggs, 2 cups milk, 2 cups
prepared pancake flour. Beat
eggs and combine with milk, add
to pancake flour and stir the in
gredients until well blended.
Bake on a hot griddle. Keep pan
cakes warm in the oven. Spread
about 2 tablespoons of meat fil
ling on each pancake and roll.
Serve hot with tomato sauce if
desired. Serves 6 to 8.
MEAT FILLING
One pound ground beef, Vs cup
chopped onion, 3 tablespoons
shortening, 1 teaspoon salt, %
teaspoon pepper, Ma teaspoon gar
lic powder, Va teaspoon celery
seed, Va teaspoon Worcestershire
sauce, Mi teaspoon horse radish,
two-thirds cup chili sauce or cat
sup, one-third cup water. Brown
ground beef and onion in fat. Add
remaiinng ingredients, and sim
mer 45 minutes.
I think if you serve this as a
noon or evening meal, you'll
want a good salad and a tasty
deesert to go with it and so
here's a, good dessert recipe for
this time of year.
o
DATE CAKE
One cup chopped dates, 1 tea
spoon soda sprinkled over dates,
1 cup hot water, pour over dates
and soda and let stand. Mix 1
cup sugar, 1 tablespoon butter,
1 V« cups flour and mix with fruit
mixture. Bake in a greased pan.
This will be very thin batter, but
do not add any more flour. Spices
may be added. Also serve with
whiped cream.

Some Ideas —
APPLE SANTAS
Let the children help make
these. For each Santa, you can
use 1 large red apple, 7 marsh
mellows, I dried prune, fig or ap
ricot, whoL? cloves and toothpicks.
Assemble this way:
Insert 2 toothpicks in back of
apple to hold Santa upright. At
tach four marshmallows to tooth- i
picks and stick in apple for arms
and legs. Fasten another marsh
mallow on top of aple for Santa’s
face. Insert cloves for eyes and
nose. Use slice of apple or raisin
for mouth.
Affix piece of dried fruit on top
of marshmallow for hair and top
with another marshmallow (tip
ped at an angle) for a hat.
For the beard cut one marsh
mallow into 2 or 3 pieces with
scissors and stick under the chin.
If the children are small and
you want to make something for
Christmas, let them stitch you
some dish holders by hand. They
will enjoy it and will be out from
under foot while you’re busy with
Christmas and holiday prepara
tions.
SANDHILL SAL
Don’t hint too much as to what
you want for Christmas. You
may end up with 6 of the same
thing. Nobody for instance needs
6 coffeemakers.
