| CAPITOL NEWS . . .
Crosby Would Air
Highway Planning
LINCOLN—Roads, politics and
school land leases made up the
week’s capitol news:
The 3 candidates for the re
publican nomination for gover
nor handled the highway issue
gingerly at a meeting in Sargent;
The campaigns for congress,
governor and U. S. senator were
warming up;
And the 'heat” continued on
in the school land fuss with strong
suggestions that it will be a factor
in the coming political cam
paign.
Highways—
Whether Nebraska should have
a highway commission was de
bated by 3 GOP gubernatorial
aspirants at a meeting of the U.
S. Highway 83 association’s Ne
braska division at Sargent. Rob
ert Crosby, bf North Platte, Hugh
Carson, of Ord, and Victor E. An
derson, of Lincoln, were the par
ticipants.
Briefly, these are the positions
they took:
Carson—A highway commission
is the only solution to the state’s
road problems. It would giro the
highway department a board of
directors. He indicated he would
help sponsor a petition drive to
put the issue of a highway com
mission on next year’s general
election ballot.
Crosby — If the legislature
passes the “right kind” of high
way commission bill, he would be
inclined to sign it if he’s elected
governor. He thinks the highway
department should publish its
plans for 2-year periods, then
stick to them
Anderson—No real objection to
a highway commission. He thinks
a governor should take the lead
in working out a compromise
among the fueding factions to de
velope a highway program with
statewide backing.
• * *
Politics—
A really persistent rumor is
one that survives flat denial. Such
a rumor is the one heard fre
quently around the statehouse
that Sen. Hugh Butler will not
file for reelection and that For
mer-Gov. Dwight Griswold will
meet Gov. Val Peterson for the
senatorial nomination.
Butler has been about as flat
as anyone can be in denouncing
the rumor, but it continues to
appear.
The campaign in the Third
congressional district between Re
publican Bob Harrsion, of Nor
loik, and Democrat Carl Olson,
of Fremont, was under way but
neither man in the first days of
the 5-week race had displayed
much in the way of campaign
fireworks.
Crosby and Anderson appeared
to be about on even terms across
the state with Lincoln and Omaha
—at this early date—appearing to
hold the key to the outcome. Car
son was still an outsider but had
scored with his demands for a
special session of the legislature
to consider raising old age assist
ance grants.
* * *
School Land Leases—
Many of the disgruntled Ne
braskans who are losing their
school land leases under the su
preme court decision invalidat
ing the 1947 lease law have ap
parently given up hope of legal
remedy and are directing their
efforts into political channels.
Persons close to the situation
say that Gov. Peterson is likely to
feel most of the wrath. A let
ter sent out to lessees by the
board of educational lands and
funds which the governor heads,
has not done much to cool off the
situation.
The letter explains that the gov
ernor and the board had no other
course of action than the one they
took.
Candidates for the legislature
from districts in which tnere are
large areas of school lands are al
ready finding it a touchy subject.
* * *
Young Plan—
Governor Peterson went to bat
for the USDA’s plan for Missouri
valley development in his testi
mony before a house of agricul
ture subcommittee in Topeka,
Kans. last week. The governor
said the so-called Young plan is
a vital piece of overall Pick
Sloan scheme of developing the
basin’s resources.
“Our first job,” he told the law
makers, “is to be soil conserva
tionists. Permit us to step up
soil conservation.”

son announce the approaching
marriage of their daughter, Bet
ty Jane, to William Marcellus,

cellus.
