Mr. and Mrs. Ch*riey Ross and the Clifford Wells family were Sunday, October 7, visitors of Mr. — The Frontier Engraving 'I GOT 3' . . , Donald Wise (a bove), son of Mr. and Mrs. Ar thur Wise, of Omaha, formerly of Stuart, in a letter to rela tives recently told how 5 North Korean reds broke through the United Nations’ line. “They were right on top of us when we saw them. I was glad I could shoot. I got 3, the other guy got 1, and we took a pris oner.” He recently asked his folks to send army coveralls and socks by airjnail (postage $8.15) with which to combat the cold. Young Wise is a. ne phew of Mrs. John Smith, of Neill, and a brother of Arthur Dean Wise, jr., who is in the navy reserve. and Mrs. Billy Wells. Mr. and Mrs. Robert White and family enjoyed an oyster supper in the Thomas Hiscocks home on Friday, October 5. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Barta and Evelyn were also visitors that evening in the Hiscocks home. Mrs. Don Bare, of Lynch, spent a few days recently with her daughter, Mrs. Bill Wilson, and family. Mrs. Art Bessert was surprised on her birthday anniversary Mon day night, October 1. A large crowd of neighbors gathered, bringing sandwiches or cake and birthday gifts. Cards were played. Ray Wilson built a shelf in the library corner of the Redbird school for the new set of Comp ton’s encyclopedias. Miss Leta Ross, teacher of the Graham school, spent the October 6 weekend at Spencer with her parents, Mr. and Mrs, Chester Ross. Mr. and Mrs. Bus Greene and Mrs. Lillian Baker, of Lynch, called in the Ray Wilson home Friday evening, October 5, to visit with the Hines relatives from Iowa, who were here visiting. FRANK HARPSTER, 82, DIES DELOIT—Frank Harpster, 82, died Friday, October 4, at the Plantation home in Elgin. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, October 9, at the Christian church in Clearwater. He had been ill several weeks prior to his death. CAM Club Gathers— The CAM club met at the home of Mrs. Donald McKamy on were played with Mrs. Wayne Wednesday, October 10. Luther Horn and his ju bilee singers, of Prattville, Ga., opened services at the Memorial Baptist, Sunday, October 14. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Tange man were supper guests of Alice, Clarence and Alvin Johnson Sunday evening, October 14. Mr. and Mrs. Louis Neilson and Mrs. Halloway drove to El gin, Sunday, to visit the Misses Mabel and Edith Kinney. Rev. L. R. Hansberry was called to Elwood last week by the death and to attend the funeral of his sister-in-law. Mrs. C. V. Robertson returned Tuesday, October 9, from Omaha and Hastings, where she had at tended garden club meetings. The Beautiful Valley garden club met Tuesday evening, Octo ber 9, at the home of Mrs. Frank Spath with about 12 members present. A roundtable discussion on flowers and bulbs was con ducted. The hostess served re freshments. Mr. and Mrs. J. O. Skinner and daughters, Mrs. Merton McCart ney, and Mrs. Archie Melvin, of Edgar, came Wednesday, Octo ber 10, to visit the former’s niece and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Art Miller and son, Glen, and niece and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Hoffman and family. Mr. and Mrs. John Mitchell and Mr. and Mrs. Bert Mitchell of Belden, spent Sunday with the former’s daughter and hus band, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Young, and family. Mr. and Mrs. John Honeywell drove to Clarkson Sunday, Octo ber 14, to attend a family reunion. Others there were: Mr. and Mrs. Joe Sinkula, Raymond Urban and Mi*. and Mrs. Vic Kaspar, all of Omaha; Mr. and Mrs. Verle Tut tle and family, of Clearwater, Mr. and Mrs. pS-ank Urban and Mr. and Mrs. Ed Urban, of Ewing. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Sievers and Floyd Lenz returned Mon day, October 1, from Fort Riley, Kans., where they visited the former’s son, Walter Lee Sievers, Arthur Hinrichsen, Joe Kamp haus, Larry Tangeiman and other friends. Mrs. Will Draper, of Sargent, and George Draper, of California, were recent visitors for several days in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Beed and family and Mr. and Mrs. Glen Grimes and family. The former is Mrs. Beed’s and Mrs. Grimes’s grand mother and the latter is their aunt. _ Rev. John Banks, of Fremont, visited Monday, October 8, in the Louis Neilson home. Mr. and Mrs. Dean Stevens and family, of Atkinson, were visitors in the E. R. Carpenter home on Sunday. _ Mr. and Mrs. ueraia Bavinw han and son moved Saturday from their farm south of Cham bers to the Vernon Smith place in town. Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Smith moved the same day to the Harold Olson ranch west of El gin. Mr. McClenahan will be em ployed at the Harley produce sta tion. The Valley Center extension club met Friday, October 12, at the home of Mrs. William Woods with 14 members and 1 visitor present. The president, Mrs. Ray Heed, opened the business session and gave a report on the council meeting which was held in O’Neill on Tuesday. October 9. She told of the plans and program for the county achievement day to be held on Friday, October 19, and urged all members and friends to attend. A report of the state council meeting, held at Grand Island, was given by one of the delegates. The club voted to sub scribe to the United Nations Re porter. The lesson on the ‘‘Home maker and Credit” was presented by Mrs. Glen Grimes after which refreshments were served by the hostess. The next meeting is scheduled for December 6, at the home of Mrs. K. N. Adams. Raymond Edward, of Cushing, and Allen Edward, of Ord, visit ed Saturday with their mother, Mrs. Valo Edward. Mrs. George Atkinson accom panied h2r sister-in-law, Mrs. Myrtle Atkinson, of Butte, to McPherson, Kans., Friday, Octo ber 12, to visit her son, Charles, who is attending school there. Charles accompanied her home and spent the weekend here. Angie Spath came home Fri day from Omaha where she at tends the Capital beauty school to spend the weekend with her parents. Son Is 6-Yeers-Old— Mr. and Mrs. Alan Van Vleck went to Neligh on Sunday and attended a birthday party in honor of their son, James, who was 6-years-old. The .party was at the home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Van Vleck, in Neligh. _ Honors Son— Mrs. J. L. McCarville, jr., enter tained 10 guests on Monday af ternoon in honor of her son, Jo seph III, who was 4-years-old. j Ice cream and cake were served. i 52 Herefords Gross $26,995 A large crowd attended the fall sale of the Holt County Here ford Breeders association held in O’Neill Saturday, October 13. Fif ty-two head of cattle sold for $26, 995, an average of $518. Thirty five bulls sold for $20,290, an av erage of $579. and 17 females sold for $6,665, an. average of $392. Benton Marshall, well known Hereford breeder of Crawford, chose lot 34, VH Adv. Silver 43rd, as the grand champion bull. The bull of Silver Knight 1 breeding sold to Morton Bros., of Bassett, for $1,000. The reserve champion bull, Beau Paladin, of Paladin and Anxiety breeding,’ was shown by Francis Anderl, of Inman. Don ald Kinzer, of Colome, S.D., pur chased the bull for $1,000. The top selling bull, HW North Star 43rd, of WHR and Baron Blanchard breeding, was bought by Frank Dobrichovsky, of Verdel, for $1010. D. E. Bowen and Son, of Page, sold Proud Mixer 11th to H. B. Stol tenberg and Son, of Burton, for $1,000. The bull was of WHR and Militant Domino breeding. The C Bar M Hereford ranch, of O’Neill, had the champion fe male), CM Adventure Lass, of Kay TO Linton and Adventure breeding. S. R. Robertson, of O’ iNeill, paid $665 for this heifer. C Bar M also showed the reserve champion CM Mischievious, of the same breeding. D. B. Lyon and Son of Milboro, S.D., purchased this heifer for $400. Francis Anderl, of Inrman, bought Miss Pansy from Geo. Rouse and Sons, of Chambers, for $530 and S. R. Super Lucy, of S. R. Robertson, of O’Neill, for $500. Flower Workshop Meeting Next Week The Federated Garden clubs, district flower arrangers work shop meeting will be held at Chambers, Wednesday, October 24. “Would you like to (make a lovely corsage for yourself? Have you often wished that scrubby lit tle flower were large enough to make into a corsage? Are you interested in garden club work? “If so, why not come to the Methodist church basement and learn more about making some of these things.” urges Mrs. C. V. Robertson, of Chambers. There will be a covered dish luncheon at noon followed by a business meeting and lesson which are to be presented by Mrs. J. W. Walter, of Chambers. Members are urged to attend. Visitors are welcome at any or all of the meetings, Mrs. Robert son added. Mr. and Mrs. Dan Snyder 'moved to Atkinson on Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Herman Janzing and fannily were Sunday visitors of Rev. John O’Brien at Platte Center.
